How does shared maternity/paternity leave work?

I’ve read up on .gov but the more I read it the more is doesn’t make sense to me.

My fear is I’m going to need another c section, the first one was such a sore recovery and my mental health really took a dip because of this and I really heavily relied on DP. This was during covid and he was furloughed so he had a good 3 months at home to help with me and the baby.

This time he’ll get his usual 2 weeks but I won’t be able to lift my toddler for at least 6 weeks, take her to nursery ect as I won’t be comfortable enough to drive. I thought about that shared leave as it might mean he can take 6 weeks shared leave to help me while I recover to the point where I can be more independent. But is that how it works? Can we both be off at the same time? Who does or doesn’t get paid for this?

Anyone done anything similar?

You would give notice for your leave to end early in order to free up leave for him to take. What he got paid would depend on his employer and what they offer for shared parental leave/pay.

You can be off at the same time or different times.

Or he could take some annual leave or some unpaid parental leave instead of you reducing your maternity leave.
