I'm trying to link my laptop to a tv I have. I've got a hdmi cable and a hdmi adaptor to attach to my laptop. I set it up thinking it would work but to no avail.

This is the diagram for hdmi connection to pc from the manual. Does the diagram mean there needs to be 2 HDMI cables going into the laptop?!

Can anyone please help! Thanks

I think it just means the HDMI can go into either HDMI port 1 or port 2.

What TV is it? It’s more likely to be that it hasn’t detected the laptop as an input. Use your remote to go into settings and look for an input option - you often need to tell it it’s a laptop/PC if it doesn’t auto detect.

You also need to use the remote to change the input to the HDMI/PC slot. Sometimes it’s a symbol like a box with an arrow coming out of ot and it will cycle through to “PC”.

Hi. Thanks. I thought it meant you need 2!

I have changed the "input" to hdmi pc on the TV but nothing is happening.

Do I need to do something on my laptop maybe? Do you think it's the cable and it needs replacing?.

The TV is a LG DM2780D

Quite often it's that the laptop isn't outputting a signal, it hasn't recognised you've plugged in another screen. Depending on your laptop, one of the F keys along the top with have a little symbol of two overlaid screens (it's usually F8). Try holding the Fn key down and pressing that, it should cycle through different outputs then.

Go into the display settings on your laptop and it may let you choose similar to the way you did on the tv (ie select external display). Failing that I'm stumped too!

mineofuselessinformation · 29/07/2021 09:36

If it's a windows laptop, try pressing the windows key and p at the same time, then select duplicate (or extend if you want to use the screens separately).

Arcticgorilla · 29/07/2021 09:42

Thanks. I've managed to use the F keybto select duplicate screen. But when I have gone into settings and clicked on detect screen it says no screen detected.

You need to click 'duplicate'

user1471530109 · 29/07/2021 09:46

On the right hand side?

mineofuselessinformation · 29/07/2021 09:49

Asking the obvious, have you tried clicking extend?
Otherwise the old failsafe - restart your laptop with the tv connected?

Arcticgorilla · 29/07/2021 09:50

Sorry. Yes I did duplicate as I noticed it was on the wrong one! I'm going to try a new hdmi cable as I don't know what else to do. Its so frustrating!

Leave everything connected then reboot your laptop, that might help it detect the second monitor (tv). If it still doesn't work, try connecting to the other HDMI port you're not using on your TV.

Arcticgorilla · 29/07/2021 13:55

Ok I've for a bit further but still not resolved! I left it all connected and came back to it and now the laptop is still saying can't detect another screen but it sort of has. See pic. I'm thinking I'm almost there but just need another tweak or something somewhere!

Your TV is only 1080p, try dropping the display resolution to 1920x1080 in the top drop down box.

Arcticgorilla · 29/07/2021 14:07

FixTheBone omg! I love you! That worked!!!! You're a flipping genius!

FixTheBone oh shit, wait. I have another problem - the TV won't give me any sound! 😭

Sound settings are elsewhere: If you have a little speaker icon in the system tray (down by the clock), press that - it'll show you the various places you can send audio to, one of them would be the TV.

Arcticgorilla · 29/07/2021 14:38

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks thank you! I now have video and sound though it's a bit laggy on the TV but I can live with that!

Thank you MNetters! You're bloody brilliant! 😃

Go into your sound settings and set your output device to the TV.

You might need to go into the Sound Control Panel. From there you can make your TV the default.
