Invited to interview while on holiday - WWYD?

I've just been invited to interview for a position I really want next week while I am on annual leave.

I will be staying in self accommodation in Scotland and the WiFi connection isn't guaranteed. Neither is my portable WiFi which sometimes works well and sometimes doesn't! It may work out fine or be a disaster.

This trip has been planned for a long while and I really need the break. I also want the job. WWYD?

Will they delay it for you. Or do it over the phone?

Smarshian · 28/07/2021 10:05

Tell them you are on annual leave and can do X date instead when you return.

purplesequins · 28/07/2021 10:06

is there a place with a private room? like a hotel?

purplesequins · 28/07/2021 10:06

good luck!

aprilanne · 28/07/2021 10:06

I would ask if the interview could be postponed. If not try to go somewhere local that has good internet connection

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 28/07/2021 10:07

Just call them and tell them the situation, hopefully they will come up with an alternative.

Frymetothemoon · 28/07/2021 10:07

I would see if I could get a day room in a hotel with a good internet connection

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 28/07/2021 10:08

I would explain.

Od probably say something like

"Thank you for inviting me to interview, I am very keen to meet you. The appointment offered, however, clashes with a trip up to Scotland and I am concerned that the hotel wifi may not be good enough to cope with a Zoom interview. If possible, could we rearrange for X, which is my first day home from the trip? I would be more than happy to speak with you over the telephone on the current interview date, but I am concerned that I couldn't get a reliable enough wifi connection for a Zoom interview, and appreciate that it is a better platform for interviewing. Please let me know what works best for you, regards, X"

Yes, just explain the situation. It's summer, people will understand there is annual leave to consider.

livealittlemore · 28/07/2021 10:11

Tell them the truth and ask if it is possible to reschedule. Recruiters do understand that people might not always be available on a date suggested. So go enjoy your holiday and reschedule to the 1st date possible after you are back... what @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz said is perfect! Good luck!

notanatural2018 · 28/07/2021 10:39

What Bernadette said, I've done exactly this just last month for two different roles. They were happy to do it after my holidays! Sure yours will be too

BashfulClam · 28/07/2021 11:24

Where are you staying. Where is the nearest large town? I stayed in a cottage is the arse end of nowhere in Scotland and had full wi-fi, but I also stayed in a small village with really sketchy internet.

Lizzie523 · 28/07/2021 11:24

Thank you everyone and @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz in particular for the useful template Smile

I proposed a new date after my holiday and they are able to do that. My mind is put at rest now.

Good luck!

newlabelwriter · 28/07/2021 11:43

I had this and just let them know re dodgy WIFI and they were fine.

Bookaholic73 · 28/07/2021 11:45

I would go to the nearest (quiet) cafe with a reliable internet connection.

Have the interview from there, but I would explain before the interview, so that if you are interrupted, they know why.
