On a scale of it will be fine to totally fucked how bad it this?

I am 55 years old. I have been complaining of pain for years. But 18 months ago the pain suddenly got worse as in more widespread. I felt ill. The doctor did some blood tests. Nothing came of it.

I continued as I was until Davina McCall did that programme on the menopause. That’s me I thought. Had another phone gp call. But the go said he wanted to rule out arthritis before recommending HRT.

I delayed the blood test until I could get a blood test done with my daughter. We both have disability so kill 2 birds with one stone.

Daughter’s gp rang her last Monday, And advised her course of treatment. As thursday I rang for my results confident nothing heard meant negative. Well Who ever I spoke to told me apart from low Vit D and pain markers up no problem. Great I thought have my holiday and arrange for HRT appoints when I get back.

However , today is our first full day of our holiday and I got a call from a gp at our surgery.

Things are definitely not fine. Blood test shows a protein which indicates bone cancer. I may have to fly back early. Its really urgent. Doctor thinks I will need a bone marrow biopsy and bone scans.

Oh fuck!

Hi, yesterday was the worst and then the best of the NHS.
By yesterday morning I was going out of my mind with worry, I was even shaking. So I rang the surgery even though they say not to before 4.00pm. In this case a negative would have the worse news but they wouldn’t have known that without the back story.

Receptionist told me the results had arrived but nobody available to explain them. Told me to phone next day at 8.00am for a same day apt. So not great but I resigned myself to not knowing.

However mid afternoon the doctor who requested the test rang, even though it was his day off. What an absolute saint! Looks positive for MGUS but he wants haematology to confirm. He will phone again once he knows for sure. Hoping to finally know within the next week or two. Certainly getting a less urgent vibe now it looks like the lesser of two evils.

And I slept properly last night.

Oh that sounds hopeful. What a brilliant doctor!

Oh I am glad for you OP - still a shock, but the better of the two. and sleep for you.

Glad (if that’s right) that it’s leaning more towards MGUS.

Do keep following up on the pain though and whether it’s connected or not.
