It just gets to me. I can hear it and nothing else in my once lovely home.

Should have googled :

The current legal noise limit for car meeting type approval is 74 decibels, and it is it is illegal to modify a car's exhaust system to make it noisier than the level at which it passed type approval with.

I've wondered this recently too as a car has come up our road a couple of times in the last week (think he's a take away delivery driver) which is extremely noisy. 75 decibels is apparently about the level of noise made by a vacuum cleaner. Pretty sure my Shark isn't anywhere near as noisy as his car - although who you report it to I've no idea.

Report any car you expect has been modified.

After market modifications must be below a certain level, there's a maximum to pass mot BUT if a classic car theres exemptions

It’s a police matter as it’s a vehicle offence however unless they are actually causing a nuisance other than noise or they get pulled up on something else there is little you can do other than log it via 111

People who have this type of exhaust usually put the manufacturer's one back on for the MOT or it wouldn't pass.

Are you talking about the engines/exhausts that make the massive banging/popping noises? That seems to be a thing here too.

I was walking through a road tunnel when a passing car made the loudest noise, like an explosion. I nearly jumped out of my skin.

Given that, like a PP says, the wankers who run this type of car will just swap out the exhaust for a normal one, the police need to pull over cars observed to be doing this while they're out on the road.

Half of them have illegal number plates or window shading too and probably haven't told their insurance companies about the mods either.
