Are these too awful?!

Despite window stickers, citronella candles and one of those blue light zapper things, I'm being driven mad by flies. I remember my grandma having exactly this fly screen when I was little, and I spotted it in Yorkshire Trading this week and felt strangely drawn to it. I think it's a nostalgia thing.
I think it's probably a crime against style, but would it be so bad? My back door is sort of on the road, so it would be visible Blush. Or am I going mad on only the first day of the holidays?!

You're going mad! Step away from it!

FelicityBeedle · 26/07/2021 15:00

I like the magnetic net ones, they’re very cheap but work incredibly well! If you want it though, go for it!

thistimelastweek · 26/07/2021 15:02

It's wonderfully retro. Go for it!

JoyOrbison · 26/07/2021 15:06

Get a beaded one with a funky design lime a sacred heart!

I'd get one, but in a slightly more subtle design. My friend has a plain white one, and the strings are fabric not plastic so it looks quite nice.

DameMargaretofChalfont · 26/07/2021 15:10

OMG - I spent many happy hours in the 1970s plaiting those strands together whilst standing in our kitchen doorway!!

When I was feeling particularly adventurous I'd do a little Maypole dance with them as well.

Go for it OP - start a revival!!!

We are near lakes do there are loads Bog fly's. We have fly screens on all the windows. I look the secondary double glazing panels back to the manufacturers and had them make replacements with fly screen instead of plastic.

The patio door has a two panel fly screen which attaches with Velcro to the door frame.

Life changing.

mollycobbles · 26/07/2021 15:25

Thank you for all the replies, especially those saying go for it !

@HollowTalk That is the fear ! God knows what I'll be buying by week 6!

@DameMargaretofChalfont That's exactly it! I remembered the plaiting, but had completely forgotten the joy of the maypole! I really miss my grandma and that door curtain!

I have seen the magnetic ones, but my door opens inwards so I don't think it would work, would it? Does anyone have any experience?

@FinallyHere No flies would definitely be life changing for me right now too!

I love it!

GameSetMatch · 26/07/2021 15:40

Awful, my MIL has them, yes the sort of stop flies but you have to look at them!

FinallyHere · 26/07/2021 15:49

We have these on the door. Sticky backed velcro on the frame, the centre is magnetic so springs apart and back together again here

mollycobbles · 26/07/2021 15:51

I like those, @FinallyHere, but my back door opens inwards so I don't know if it would work?

You get some lovely versions of those now, from plain white, cream, black, some plain, some with crystals, you even get bamboo ones

I’d maybe go for a more modern version.

mollycobbles · 26/07/2021 15:57

Argos do this - is it more acceptable (if less exciting)?

Plastic tat that will go straight to landfill when you get tangled up in it and they snap, that’s what I remember anyway! The bamboo one is much nicer, step away from the plastic yuckiness.

Me too. I like the plastic strip ones far better than the magnetic net ones, they're horrible.

I agree about getting one for retro purposes, but get a bamboo one if you want to avoid the plastic version.

CarnationCat · 26/07/2021 16:16

Go for it. I would but have a patio door and don't use the back door. Suppose I could put two up at the patio door?

WeAreTheHeroes · 26/07/2021 16:18

We have French doors from our kitchen to outside. The magnetic type fly curtains don't fit. I bought something sold as for use in caravans and use the velcro Command Strips to fix the header above the doors. Works a treat though it is a bit naff.

WeAreTheHeroes · 26/07/2021 16:22

Can't find a link now, but it's basically overlapping lengths of stiff net which are weighted at the bottom. You cut them to size and clip them into the header rod. I take our down in winter.
