Social etiquette whilst sunbathing

I am currently abroad, and on two separate days, I’ve been sat next to someone who:

A) was watching TV on their phone without headphones

B) blasting a radio through an actual speaker!

Both times I moved because it was annoying. Why can’t people have a bit of courtesy and put some headphones in??

Why have you not spoken to them? Do you not speak their language?

gogohm · 26/07/2021 15:21

It's common to play music on the beach I'm afraid. Apart from asking nicely there's nothing else you can do

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 26/07/2021 15:33

Music on the beach is common in some countries including where I live. It's not considered discourteous.

Rude sods, do it right back!

Some people just love to moan! 🙄

Do people only have to be polite when asked? Or do most of us try not to be twats without being asked?
Just10moreminutesplease · 26/07/2021 15:53

But what constitutes politeness varies between different cultures and, to an extent, between individuals from within any given culture.

Maybe the people playing music don’t see it as rude?

If it is bothering you, ask them nicely to keep it down. Whatever you do, don’t let it spoil your break! (I’m not jealous, promise Grin).

Dozer · 26/07/2021 15:54

Location matters here: where were you?

Dozer · 26/07/2021 15:55

If a crowded public beach or park, YABU

PatsyJStone · 26/07/2021 15:57

I’ve had the same, but they’ve gone off for a long lunch leaving their radio on. I moved their towel over it once it was clear they were gone.

I don’t understand why people can’t watch tv on phones/play games etc. without using headphones and realising that the people in their vicinity don’t want to hear their choice of noise. I also don’t think people should have to ask others to turn things down or off, just be more considerate and thoughtful in the first place.

This.

To all of the comments about a beach - it wasn’t on the beach. It was around a quiet pool area where everyone else was reading / sleeping / listening to music via headphones.

In a hotel!

TheChosenTwo · 26/07/2021 16:29

I’d ask politely if they had headphones and if not move on. I don’t go on holiday to listen to other people’s bloody music or tv choice. People just piss me off!
Which incidentally is also why I choose to book a self catering villa so I can please myself Grin

starrynight87 · 26/07/2021 16:38

Music on the beach is always loud and terrible

It’s not moaning. Op - some people are just inconsiderate dicks. I’d have to say something like ‘hey, can you listen to that using headphones please - everyone else doesn’t necessarily want to listen to the same thing you do. Thanks ever so much.’
Sillysuzie · 26/07/2021 16:54

Nothing irritates me as much as listening to other people's shite, but at the same time, I can't bear headphones, they give me terrible migraine. So I can sympathise both ways. That said, I don't inflict my tastes on other people. I trawl Mumsnet instead 🤣

Why? That makes no sense.
warmandtoasty2day · 26/07/2021 16:56

some people are just bloody selfish, you can have a good time without inflicting your music tastes on everyone else.

Ah no, round a quiet pool here you wouldn't play music. It's more of a beach thing.

I can't use headphones any more because of neuralgia, so I just don't watch/listen to anything, and I also can't block out what others are playing.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 26/07/2021 17:00

I've done this on a train. The guy looked absolutely astonished to discover that we didn't all want the pleasure of listening to his music :-)

Eviethyme · 26/07/2021 17:10

i cringe when people walk down town with music blaring from there phone thats in there pocket normally with there tops off. Just so Cringe

quizqueen · 26/07/2021 17:16

We had a lovely space on the beach the other day, next to the groynes.
Then 4 teenagers came on their bikes, brought them down onto the sand and dumped them right next to us, boxing us in. There was loads of other space elsewhere. Just thoughtless and self centred behaviour.

fluffedup · 26/07/2021 17:22

We were on the beach at Looe in Cornwall about 3 years ago. It was a lovely sunny day and the beach was crowded with families. There was a fair bit of noise - children playing, waves crashing, people talking, seagulls, that sort of thing, but it was still pleasant and relaxing, everyone was friendly.

Then this arsehole scumbag family turned up and started playing music loudly. Everyone glared at them but NOONE including us said anything, we just put up with it for the rest of the afternoon. We could have done with you there @ZZTopGuitarSolo
