I think it had many episodes.
I would love to watch it again. Any ideas what it was?

The Devil's Crown maybe?

If it was French it could have been Les Rois Maudits.

The Devil's crown is on YouTube! I will definitely watch it.
I should be able to say if it was the one I am looking for when I see some characters. I still can remember some costumes.

I was going to suggest The Pallisers, then realised that only one of the characters was called Plantagenet which isn't the same thing 😂

Thanks @FlibbertyGiblets this might have been it! The Accursed Kings.
It looks like they made another version nothing that long ago. And there are books it was based on. Not sure I have energy to read such long series of books.

It’s definitely The Devil’s Crown. I remember watching it aged about 8 or 9 with my parents and it gave me a lifelong fascination with history. It starred Brian Cox as Henry II and Jane Lapotaire as his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, but also went on to show the reigns of Richard I and John after Henry’s death.

I rewatched some of it on YouTube recently and it’s a little strange tbh. The BBC clearly didn’t have the budget for full-on, realistic sets for such an extensive series, and so someone must have decided to ‘solve’ the problem by staging the show almost as though it was actually a theatrical performance, with deliberately obvious painted backdrops. As a result, it looks rather odd by modern standards, and the acting is hammier than a ham sandwich. The first series of Blackadder was largely a spoof of this programme.

(As an aside, the first ever winner of ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’ won it by answering the question ‘Which king was married to Eleanor of Aquitaine?’ I can remember watching this with flatmates circa 2000, and being stunned that this was a question considered so difficult that it was worth £1 million! I just sat there going ‘But… I’ve known the answer to that since I was 8 years old!’ It was an interesting moment, discovering that having watched an obscure historical drama series as a child could have made me a millionaire. Oh well, you can’t win ‘em all, eh? Smile).

Loved it.. it had so many fine actors in it. It was called the Plantagenets. It had Martin Jarvis, Brian Cox
