Londoners - cheap/discounted food & toiletries

Comefromaway · 25/07/2021 14:30

Dd has just moved to London and one thing she’s really missing is Home Bargains & B & M.

Surely there must be an equivalent place that sells really cheap but branded toiletries, household products and tinned/packet foods?

Which bit of London are you in?

There are both of those in outer London, and Wilkos dotted around the place too

eurochick · 25/07/2021 14:46

PaddleBlue · 25/07/2021 14:47

Poundland? Or poundstretcher, whatever it is

KaptainKaveman · 25/07/2021 14:58

Savers is best fir cleaning products and some toiletries. No food though.

purpledagger · 25/07/2021 15:26

London does have B&M and Home Bargains, but there aren't many stores.

Wilkos, Poundland, Sams 99p store are worth a try.

She could try going to independent world foods supermarkets, as they have packets of pasta, rice, herbs and spices cheaply.

MyAnacondaMight · 25/07/2021 16:41

She isn’t going to find any of that stuff in central London, or the high streets of affluent neighbourhoods - but there are B&M stores, Wilko, Poundlands etc. all over Zone 3 neighbourhoods.

Comedycook · 25/07/2021 16:43

Yes I live in zone three and we have loads of these places, Wilko's, b &m and home bargains. Where is she roughly?

cherry2727 · 25/07/2021 17:03

Hey OP- Where in London is she? Anywhere Near East? There are two B&M's a short train ride if she is anywhere Near East London! Let me know and I'll ping you most details x

EssentialHummus · 25/07/2021 17:07

What everyone else said. Where is she?

NuffSaidSam · 25/07/2021 17:15

There's absolutely loads.

We have B&M and Home Bargains in London. And Wilko, Savers, Poundland, 99p shop, Poundstretcher, various other pound emporiums!

MotherWol · 25/07/2021 17:47

Tell her to get the Too Good To Go app too - cafes put their unsold food in mystery bags you can get for a couple of quid. Yesterday I got a dozen bagels for £2.50 and you can easily get a week’s worth of breakfasts for cheap.

Akire · 25/07/2021 17:51

Yes plenty of those shops around but often in “out of town” places not on high street.

Comefromaway · 25/07/2021 18:35

She’s in Clapham at the moment temporarily but moves to Mottimgham next week for the summer. Long term she’s hoping to find somewhere in NW London eg Ealing, Chiswick, Acton, Barons Court, Shepherds Bush as she’ll be studying near White City.

Wilkos is wonderful. There are a few in South London and one in Kingston. Poundland and Poundstretcher are too.

DS2 lives in central London and often gets unbelievable bargains by going to supermarkets at the end of the day. He gets fresh fish and meat for about 60% discount, and bread and pastries for a few pence.

HundredMilesAnHour · 25/07/2021 18:41

She'll find Wilco etc in Shepherds Bush / White City as well as Acton. Just fyi OP, she's moving to west London, not NW London.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/07/2021 18:44

I’m not far from Mottingham - we have all the shops you listed within a 10min drive

SquirmOfEels · 25/07/2021 19:02

From Clapham, it a short bus ride it about 4 stops in the Tube to Tooting Broadway - there's a shop of that type a short walk south on Mitcham Road (sorry, don't know the shops name -I don't think it's part of a big chain)

And from there it's easy to have an explore of Tooting Market

NuffSaidSam · 25/07/2021 20:15

'Long term she’s hoping to find somewhere in NW London eg Ealing, Chiswick, Acton, Barons Court, Shepherds Bush as she’ll be studying near White City'.

This is my neck of the woods (West, not North West). I can confirm that most of the cheap shops mentioned are available in Acton, Ealing and Shepherds Bush (on the high street). Fewer in Chiswick, but if she chooses the Acton side of Chiswick (which I imagine she will unless she's a millionaire) easy walking distance to the shops in Acton.

Svalberg · 25/07/2021 21:10

There's a Wilko if you cross the road to the right if you come out of Tooting Broadway tube then walk down rightways, it's about 10m o your left - you can see it if you come out of the tube & look across the road to your right

Comefromaway · 25/07/2021 22:43

I find that Wilko is usually more expensive than B & M/Home Bargains and us only really good for toiletries. But I guess she’ll have to economise.

OP posts:
NuffSaidSam · 25/07/2021 22:44

I agree Wilko is the least cheap of the cheap shops, but all the other ones are available in London too.

londonmummy1966 · 25/07/2021 22:58

If she is in Clapham there are poundlands in Streatham, Brixton and Balham and a Savers in Streatham plus a Wilco in Tooting.

Milomonster · 25/07/2021 23:37

Savers is fantastic for toiletries and cleaning stuff. Owned by Superdrug, I think.
Discounted food - loads of discounted food at M&S and Waitrose in the evenings and Sundays.

Comefromaway · 26/07/2021 11:01

You see I find Poundland a bit of a ri off as they just make sizes smaller to make you think you are getting a bargain. An 89p shower gel from B & M costs £1 in Poundland.
