I’ve used Facebook for years but today I had something happen that I have never had before. Someone not on my friends list, or the friends list of anyone I tagged in my post has been able to comment on it. How has this happened and what can I do to make sure it doesn’t happen again? As far as I can see my profile is really secure with everything set set to ‘friends’ only. I can’t work it out! Thanks in advance

If anyone comments then all their friends can see and comment on it too. It depends on your friends' settings too

I had the same on profile pictures random people with no mutual friends. Also had friends friend who I've never met like a couple of my status pics that aren't public posts, realised she's following me I find it odd but whatever. The person may be following you even if not on your friends list.

You need to check the privacy settings on the post. It will have a little symbol of two people (means friends only) or a world (means public).

Profile photos and cover photos are always public even if you have your normal settings on friends only.

Be careful you haven't posted in a group by mistake. Public groups mean anyone can see your post.

Lastly, hover over or click on the mystery commenter. Sometimes people change their name on Facebook and you might not immediately realise it's somebody you already know.

This has happened to me when I have posts where I have tagged people and it’s one of their friends who can see the post and comment despite my not being friends with them.

Privacy settings for photos and posts. Tighten them up.
