Buying a last minute birthday present for my partner but have never bought gold jewellery before so don't have a clue. Buying online so don't even know where is reputable.

He has a chain which broke so want to get one as close as possible. It's stamped 375 which I believe means is 9 karat gold. But what's all this Italian gold, yellow gold malarkey - haven't a clue what his one would be classed as? And the prices seem to vary soooo much!

Hi 375 means 9ct Gold but does it have a proper hallmark? It could just be gold plated if not.

TSJ19 · 24/07/2021 14:54

The yellow gold is the colour of the metal. Some people will only wear yellow gold and some people only like white gold. White gold is actually yellow gold it just had a rhodium plating over the top which makes it white.

oh dear, it sounds complicated. I will share an image in a mo, maybe that will help...

I know it's only an image on the screen, but anyone care to guess what kind of gold this is??

Thats yellow in colour and its stamped 375 which means 9ct gold but its not a proper hallmark so it could not be real gold.

TSJ19 · 24/07/2021 15:08

I wouldn't buy it

TSJ19 · 24/07/2021 15:09

I worked in a Jewellers and if someone came in to sell a chain like that and it was just stamped we would have to test it first to check it was pure gold

cakedup · 24/07/2021 15:10

You wouldn't buy what?

OP posts:
cakedup · 24/07/2021 15:11

Ok...so if I bought one with a proper hallmark then that would be an improvement

Sorry i meant i wouldn't buy it without seeing it properly with just the 375 stamp.

Its hard to explain on here

TheCanyon · 24/07/2021 15:20

Does he actually suit yellow gold?

fabulousathome · 24/07/2021 15:25

It has a lobster clasp if that helps. Easier to do up than some.

Measure the length of the chain too. You want to get the same I imagine.

@TheCanyon

Does he actually suit yellow gold?
Grin that sounds like a really polite way of saying yellow gold looks shit! Oh God knows, I didn't even know a type of gold could suit anyone.

Back online as i have to get the chain today....thanks, also helpful to know what kind of clasp it is. And I have measured it so fingers crossed I'll find something. Thanks all.

Has he taken it to a jeweller for be repaired? Seems a better option that buying a new one !

FusionChefGeoff · 27/07/2021 14:41

You could just take it to a jeweller to get it fixed?!
