Thanks for this Katekarate I need to get motivated. I don't drink, but I'm definitely consuming too much sugar and carbs, mainly to offset the exhaustion. And exercise is something I've been avoiding, but need to push through and make myself now.
CornishPastyDownUnder what's a massage gun, I like the sound of pummelling my tum, does it do something to the fat under the surface or something?

Watching with interest. Definitely up for an effort in august!

Delatron I wonder this too. Its not just my new squidgy tummy bothering me now. Yesterday I spent a lot of the day looking at my knees.....wtf has happened to my knees. I have wrinkles in my knees ffs Grin. The face.....well erm, its ok no wrinkles but its definitely moving south.

I'm reading all this and thinking maybe I can just pick clothes that don't show my podgy tummy off too badly? It sounds hard work!

Interesting about HRT, thanks.

There are a few of us then yay. I'm away next week so will get back on MN 1st August and in the meantime going to mentally prepare and get in some healthy foods and exercise apps. Also going to aim to wear clothes with actual waistbands in August as a reminder to stay off the chocolate and wine.

Mine is returning. I’ve gone onto HRT. Doing intermittent fasting (four months in) I’ve lost a stone and another one to go.

Weight gain as we get older may not be down to the menopause or the peri menopause as my husband has also had to reduce his calorie intake to avoid middle age spread.

The difference with men is that they can lose it again relatively recently. Without going onto HRT it is incredibly difficult for perimenopause onwards to lose weight even with drastic calorie reduction/exercise.

Maybe it’s genetic. One sister went to visit another and sent me a photo - it’s mum and grandma! They are both a bit older than me, so I am resigned (our eldest sister is the same!)

Funny you should post this as I've decided this week to try and turn it around. I lost 3.5kg this week, but I needed to, as I was 93kg and 165cms. I've low carbed and today I did my first HIITs on YT. I nearly died but I was good.

My downfall, and it's huge one, is wine. I drink too much. One vice at a time, though!

I shall also write down a list of motivators and put it somewhere easy to reach for.

Good luck to everyone taking back control.

Can anyone recommend an online Pilates thing, one that does the class with you, not one demo and minutes of Californian 'motivation' talk; followed by another demo, etc?

Gave up alcohol, which is killing me, but it's the only thing that's work

Fordian , I've been using the FitOn app which has a lot of Pilates/core options and the instructor does the whole thing.
Found it has a good range of difficulty levels too. There is an element of Californian-ness though, some instructors more than others! Grin

I've been trying to find my waist for the past few years, tried eating better and weighing myself but always give up. I'm definitely peri-menopausal.

So I've started doing daily yoga, plank and stretching and I've lost an inch round my belly button and an inch from my thighs! I started it on Monday, takes me about 45 minutes, which over the week adds up.

I've swapped the scales for the tape measure and I'm so motivated and my clothes already fit better. I can't quite give up the alcohol - I love a nice glass of wine or g&t Blush

I gave up alcohol for three months recently and I noticed I was leaner around the middle.

And then I started drinking wine again and I do have a noticeable belly now.

Ugh.

Drinking wine is my favorite pastime but I think it's time to let that go.

@MiniTheMinx yes to the wrinkly knees 😱.
My legs used to be my best feature! I don’t have anything left now! I’m wondering if you can have Botox in the knees!

I never lost my waist but I’m a pear shape so maybe this makes a difference....I am same weight I was when I was 18 but eat far less calories and drink much less alcohol

@Katekarate

Thanks for these - might turn over a new leaf in August by
  • no alcohol
  • no sugar
  • yoga/pilates most days
  • maybe reducing carbs a bit/eating a bit less

See if there's any improvement after a month

Yup - all this and a PT
So boring

I do barre ( Meet you at the Barre). Whittles your waist like you wouldn’t believe. Plus very good fun.

What works for me is intermittent fasting and low carb. Don’t drink wine on a regular basis. I also run three times a week. Also accept that it’s a way of life to keep it off rather than a quick fix. I do eat carbs and drink from time to time but not every day.

I rarely eat bread or cake. If I do, I'm bloated the next day. I eat fruit for breakfast instead of toast or cereal.

I watch portion sizes and try to walk 10k steps minimum daily. Doing this, I've lost a stone in 2 months. 2 more to go Blush but I'm not giving up my wine at the weekend!

Keto and HRT

I started to get the ‘spread’ about 43. Went keto and halted it.

HRT was at 45 to stop the peri anxiety

Low carb/ keto is crucial for the middle age belly. If you’ve been eating a lot of refined carbs up to this point, you most likely have some form of insulin resistance, maybe even pre-diabetes and with that comes visceral belly fat.

Cut the carbs and you’ll see that reversed. Calorie counting won’t do it anymore because of the insulin resistance issue.

Yep. Didn't think it was possible in my 50s as my waist got scarily (unhealthily) big and it worried me with Covid etc.
Now 5+ stone lighter. Overall fat % and visceral fat way down. Waist about 25-26 inches which I'm happy with.
All through low carb, no sugar and intermittent fasting. Also exercise.
