Mine all goes on my tits and my arms, I look HUGE even though I'm really not. I do Pilates 2x a week and swim 3x and I gave up alcohol six months ago - it's made no difference at all. How do people get started with weights?

@Katekarate please add me too! Although my sticking power is poor. I'm peri and on HRT, had a waist pre EMCS and haven't really seen it since. I'm maintaining weight through combining IF and slimfast but if I'm losing I'm doing it so slowly I catch up with myself before it goes anywhere!

I tried pilates recently for the first time and enjoyed it so will try to do classes more regularly. I'd love to say I'd go low sugar but no. I couldn't. Don't drink much though, give me chocolate over booze any day.

I'm trying to sort myself out a bit, too, so I'd be keen on support!!

@Yogachick

Daily yoga & Pilates folk, what do you do?as in website/teacher/practice/home/gym?

I have a subscription to yoga glo but also saved classes on YouTube. Time Sinesi is very good...Yoga with Adrienne is also great for those starting out. If you search on the time of class you want and filter to most recent there are quite a few choices...but it helps to put the time in e.g " 45 mins yoga" otherwise you have to see everything people have tagged as yoga which can be a little seedy

Sign me up please! I miss my waist so much, I thought we were friends. . . I don’t eat breakfast and have no interest in sugar but since relocating to a hot country (and not burning any calories to stay warm like before) plus hitting 47 and lockdowns on top, I’m currently a blob, sporting the flat bum, big waist combo, which was not what I’d hoped for in moving here, none of my nice summer clothes fit any more. I’m guessing the cold beers in the evenings aren’t helping either. Company in my misery would be awesome!

Is hula hooping something that would help? I'm doing a mixture of hula hooping and pilates. Not due to menopause, more due to the spare tyre I've developed

I mentioned upthread about my jelly peri menopausal belly and so I've ditched my scales and got out the tape measure.

So in a week I've lost 2 1/2 inches round by belly button, 1/2 inch from my thigh, 2 inches from my hips and 1/2 inch from my waist.

This is from a combination of mindful and logging all my food, attempting to cut back on the wine, massively upping my water consumption and daily yoga practice and planking. Although I've decided not to log food and drink at the weekend as I want to maintain this so I think 24/7 logging is too much.

I am so pleased and this week I'm going to try and add in a daily walk or run.

I probably need to look at the low carbing threads and think about that next week.

I'm obese. I managed to shift 2 stone since Xmas while wfh, as I made sure I ate less and forced myself to go and walk to do the shopping at lunchtime. Before this, I noticed I had symptoms suggesting I could be on the way to developing type 2 diabetes. Both type 1 and type 2 are common in my family.

It looks like we'll be wfh almost full time now, so for my next step, I've downloaded the NHS free weight loss app, along with their suggested meal planning app.

So this evening I'm prepping food ready to begin tomorrow, as I have found prepping reduces the temptation to just grab and eat.

Once I've got my poor eating habits under control and created new habits over the next few weeks, I'm thinking of adding in intermittent fasting. I just don't want to pile stress on myself yet by trying to do too much too soon.

I have found, however, that the weightloss so far hasn't been evenly spread, as I'm not losing quite as much around the tum. I did comfort eat during the breakup with my ex, and while I've got that extra weightt off, my measurements are definitely not the same as before.

So, I'm reading with interest, as I'd love to get the weight off and feel good about myself, as I spent years with my ex constantly negging me, and it does have an effect.

Intermittent fasting and low carb/keto basically do the same thing….both work because they starve the body of glucose so it has to access fat stores and use that for energy. Usually that extra visceral fat around the tummy

How many strength training sessions a week do people do? And for how long?

Report
Upupandiwent · 25/07/2021 12:39

Hi, I'd love to join in too. I'm 52 and my stomach is huge, whilst my bum is going flatter. Its not a good look!
I've had success in the past by doing low carb and intermittent fasting. It does work, but you need to stick to it.
Just joined the gym to try strength training and trying Pilates for the first time.
Great ideas here. I'm going to check out Davina McCall...is it a website?

Yes it will build muscle and boost your metabolism.

I’ve just joined a gym and found a decent PT - I’ve never strength trained in my life but do run. I’ve found running isn’t making the difference any more. Will strength training help shift the weight?

I’m in for August! I feel like a blob. 42 with a stomach disproportionately bigger than the rest of my body Confused I have no idea if I’m anywhere near peri but if not I’d like to lose some of the spare tyre before that hits

@Katekarate please count me in! Tummy is dreadful and generally need to lose around a stone in weight. I've just started face to face Pilates for my back problems and complete lack of core strength and want to do some online exercise classes but feel a bit overwhelmed by the choice!

I'm in!

I did BIWI bootcamp years ago (I name change a lot) and it really worked but life events mean I have put on so much weight over the last couple of years.

I don't drink (well only with one group of friends occasionally and that's not been happening recently) but never at home.

Crisps however Blush

I am low carb. Which works, but I still can’t stop the wine

I would like to join you all for August though I prob will end up not checking in every day if that’s ok? I am 43 and definitely perimenopausal. Gained weight over the last few year and ended up being overweight by 3 1/2 stone.
Lost almost 3 stone of that now and still losing but the weight is stubbornly sticking to my belly still! When I was a healthy weight before my stomach was one of my best features: washboard stomach and lovely nipped in waist. Would love to get back to that, or at the least have a smaller waist than now.

Eugh...this is so depressing.
I'm 50 and peri. I'll really struggle (history of ED) if I start to "thicken at the waist".

I exercise loads, but it's swim, run and bike rather than strength.

I barely drink alcohol anyway but my food is chaotic.
