Smoke Alarm Keeps going off

Upstairs hall smoke alarm has gone off about 5 times in the last hour. No sign of smoke. None of the other alarms upstairs or downstairs have gone off.

Faulty alarm or tiny spider/fly inside it? or could something else be triggering it?

Change the batteries.
It could also be too warm

SnapDragonQueen · 23/07/2021 14:05

Mine did this the other day - I discounted batteries because it's connected to the mains. However on closer inspection it did have batteries that needed changing. Grin

Humidity sets it off I’ve found out. I’m going away this weekend so have taken the batteries out (I know, I know), to spare the neighbours as mine’s been going off all week.

BikeRunSki · 23/07/2021 14:07

It needs new batteries and a dust!

FreezerBird · 23/07/2021 14:09

Mines been doing the same. It had new batteries about a month ago so not that.

The fact it's the upstairs not down has made me put it down to the heat but I am going to take it down later and give it a good hoovering too.

I think the humidity thing depends on the type of alarm.
BertieBotts · 23/07/2021 14:10

It's probably dusty, hoover it.

Smoke alarms work by passing a beam of light through to a receiver. The smoke obstructs the beam and when the receiver doesn't detect the light any more it will make the beeping noise.

So an insect or dust in the way does the same thing.

Huddle · 23/07/2021 14:28

@somebodyoutthere I have been away. Got back late last night when it was cooler. Perhaps it has been going off all week 😬

I'll have to ask the adjoining neighbours

If the batteries are low it normally just beeps once every few minutes.

I will change them just in case though

I've got DH to get it down and give it a good dust Grin

The smoke alarm is a sealed battery and after a few days peace going off again.

Going to get rid but how on earth do I dispose of it and stop it going off?

Don't want it screeching from the wheelie bin at all hours of the day
