Maunsel Lock Tea Rooms, a cafe next to the canal not far off the M5, nice lunch stop or for a snack and some fresh air and a wander.

From the Midlands we often break with a night in Devon, then set off earlyish the next day and do a couple of stops along the way, like Dartmoor or National Trust places. I find that last non-motorway section is the worst in terms of travel, so breaking it up helps.

We’ve previously stopped near Buddleigh Salterton, Dartmeet and Dawlish.
