When did sofas get so bloody expensive and where can I find a decent one?

Few years ago I wasn't as well paid as I am now. When looking at sofas all the nicer ones were 400-600, so on my budget of 200 I got an uncomfortable sofa bed because it was better than nothing.

Now I am back with that 600 to spend, all the sofas (in pretty much the same styles and colours) are 800+??

Am I missing something? Where are you all getting your lovely AND comfortable sofas?

British Heart Foundation charity shop. Okay it is not a new sofa, but it is clean and comfortable.

PiccalilliChilli · 20/07/2021 18:58

I couldn't find a nice one for your budget at all. In the end spent £850 on a Next sofa. Even IKEA ones are pricey.

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 20/07/2021 18:59

People but them on 0% finance which increases the price they can afford.

Like you I'm looking at sofas and finding most of them way out of price range (especially as we need 2 ideally) Some Ikea ones are definitely less than £600 and have had positive feedback on lots of threads on here.

kateclarke · 20/07/2021 19:04

If you have a next clearence store near you try them. I got two matching 3 seat sofas for £49 each and they are really comfy.

MotherOfDemons · 20/07/2021 19:05

@Changethetoner I had totally forgotten about them. I have zero qualms about a second hand sofa at all, so it's worth a look as they deliver too! Gumtree is unfortunately out of the question as we don't drive :(

@PiccalilliChilli it's crazy isn't it? I can't believe how expensive they are now!

Laura Ashley second hand. Loads knocking about on FB market place. Get it professionally cleaned.

Naaaaah · 20/07/2021 19:07

Lovely, comfortable and under a grand don't really exist sadly.

MotherOfDemons · 20/07/2021 19:08

@GlutenFreeGingerCake this is tempting, although I have a fear of anything on finance after getting into debt at 18 and being viciously harassed by debt collectors for slipping up (quite badly mind you!). Worth keeping in mind though as I am in a better financial place.

Will check out Ikea @kateclarke, just bought the most comfortable mattress ever from there so petty confident the sofas will be comfy too!

@WhiskeyNeverStartsToTasteNice we don't unfortunately, but will check out Next anyway as you never know!

That was my fear @Naaaaah :(

Will have a look on FB but the issue is we don't drive @MirandaMarple. Although I could hire a van as the prices are really good on some of the second hand stuff!

We've got an IKEA sofa, had it about 4 years now and still as good as new. Covers can be washed, it's comfy and was about £500.

Grainjar · 20/07/2021 19:18

We've got an IKEA Ektorp. Its comfy and cheap. If you like a former seat, Sofa Sofa foam ones are good value.

DelphiniumBlue · 20/07/2021 19:23

Am sitting very comfortably on an old IKEA Ektorp sofa. If you are shortish like me they are great as the seat is not too deep.
Otherwise 2nd hand.
Someone I know got one from a house clearance company recently, they had lots of choice within his budget of under 300 quid. I helped him look online, we chose one that looked comfy ( was mid-lockdown so couldn't visit the storeroom) and they delivered ( for a fee).

With enough time and energy spent, eBay can still be a good bet.

Just before the pandemic we bought two brown leather sofas from a non-business seller for £800.

On looking them up later, they were m&s sofas worth £3,600 new!!

Stickywhitelovepiss · 20/07/2021 19:31

Just re-read and that is above your price range.

Our previous brown leather sofas were £80 for the two, good quality for the price and lasted us ten years till our eBay "upgrade".

My teens have Argos ones in their bedrooms which are comfy.

EscapeTheCastle · 20/07/2021 19:35

My ikea sofa lasted 18 years. It was very lovely.

Authenticcelestialmusic · 20/07/2021 19:36

I have argos/habitat ones and they are really good. They had a sale on with 20% off, I wanted cheap ones as I had three very small children. I intended to replace them but over 5 years later I’m still pleased with them .

colouringindoors · 20/07/2021 19:38

Secondhand Multiyork would be in your budget. My 23 year old multiyork sofa is still going v strong and most comfortable sofa I've ever sat on 😁 They went bust cos they last for ever!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/07/2021 19:39

Ditto to charity shops. I’ve seen some amazing ones in our local hospice shop, for a fraction of the new price.

Mansplainee · 20/07/2021 19:39

Made.com have some cheaper ones and they’re fairly stylish. Have never owned one so can’t speak for comfort or quality sorry.

Theunamedcat · 20/07/2021 19:40

Get a man with a van to deliver a second hand sofa then your sorted 👌

PattyPan · 20/07/2021 19:42

I second IKEA. We have an ektorp sofa, we’ve had it for a few years so it think prices have gone up slightly but it was £250 so much more reasonable than DFS etc. It’s comfortable, holding up well and the covers are machine washable!
