Neighbours dog outside barking constantly from 3-4am

..but I don't know who's dog it is, or where exactly it's coming from. I suspect it's being put out in the enclosed shared garden space of a building of flats a couple of doors down but I can't see into that space to know for sure.

It's driving me and my little DC nuts as we're getting woken up between 3-4am nightly and can't get back to sleep properly because it just doesn't stop barking.

It wakes us whether the windows are open or not unfortunately, but we really need them open.

Ugh what can I do about this? Sad

I do feel sorry for the dog but selfishly I just want us to be able to sleep.

Are you sure it’s not a fox maybe? They make a repetitive barking type noise sometimes.

It's definitely a dog, a large one too by the sounds of it.

It always starts around the same time, like somebody is putting it out to do its business then not letting back in for atleast an hour.

Weird time. Is the owner maybe coming home from work and letting it out do you think? Pretty rubbish to leave it out for an hour each time - both for you and the dog.
Could you ask around the neighborhood, find out where it is and speak to the owner or put a note through? Cannot believe they are unaware of the disturbance though. If no joy from that, probably a good idea to keep a diary of dates, times etc and then contact the noise abatement dept of your local council.

Thank you for the link and advice. I've asked my immediate neighbours but they don't know who it belongs to either. We have noticed some people outside the front of that building so we're wondering if it's them and they're new tenants, hence never having this issue before.

I was considering putting a letter through the communal door but don't want to rub anybody up the wrong way if I'm mistaken.

Put a note through the door with your telephone number on and a brief apology if its not them
If it is them, tough, they would know it's a nuisance

Have you got a local Facebook page? Ours is always full of people asking (moaning) about dogs barking and pooing.

Are you on NextDoor? Mine is full of stuff like this. Somebody will know whose dog it is.
