Love it!

Turmerictolly · 19/07/2021 19:14

Really brilliant ad. I hadn't seen it and think the tone is spot on. Love the choice of song too.

@SoddingWeddings

Here you go!

Thank you!

I just sat there fixated it's literally the best thing I've seen on the telly for s really long time!

It’s brilliant.
Love the wheelchair user at the step.

NiceGerbil · 19/07/2021 21:37

I spent a lot of time in children's hospital as a kid due to a birth defect that affected my mobility.

Didn't fix it but the worst went! Have never been able to do s lot of stuff- jumping running etc but no pain now. And I can walk so it's mostly invisible.

I made friends with other kids in there with a massive range of usually physical disabilities. In a wheelchair for a while- once got to have a go in a basketball one they are so light and amazing!

Anyway it reminds me of those days and my friends back then.

I think it's just a... Run out of superlatives for the ad!

As a wheelchair user particularly liked the cafe step and Fucks sake part. You can win gold for your country and still not get in a shop in your town.
Same.

NiceGerbil · 19/07/2021 21:40

I loved the FFS as well!

People with disabilities are so often presented as saints or infantilised in the media.

Nope just people with a ton of extra shit to navigate in life.

I’m more surprised people are surprised about step. I can’t do a ridge over an inch so even if it’s not a doorstep but just large door frame it’s not accessible. Pretty much unless it’s major chain store in uk it’s very much luck of the draw I’d say stand only shops I can get in 5% of them locally.

exwhyzed · 19/07/2021 22:05

It's great isn't it. I saw it the other night.

Shows the dedication, pain and sacrifices that all athletes have to make to compete at Olympic level.

Paralympians are no exception, but like all athletes who compete on the world stage they are exceptional human beings.

NiceGerbil · 19/07/2021 22:30

I agree with your point but from the perspective of getting to compete at that level the barriers are way bigger.

I don't know how the athletes start out but I imagine (correct me if I'm wrong) that the pathway do sport at school/ a club, be good, access established pathways to progress/ maybe get noticed etc are just not there in the same way or much at all.

I looked long and hard to find things I could do, join in with, with my limitations. Or anything around specific.

I hope that has changed but I'd be surprised.

Yes, this!
Geneticsbunny · 20/07/2021 21:56

Yes. I agree. It's great. Did anyone else notice it is audio described all the way through? I thought that was pretty cool.

NiceGerbil · 20/07/2021 21:59

Thanks for pointing out!

It would be a bit of a miss if they hadn't considered the requirements of those who need different ways to access it (not sure of the right word).

Wonderful. And Ellie with a neck full of previous medals.

Akire · 21/07/2021 06:24

I thought Ellie with medals was racing against the non medal Ellie. The pressure of doing as well as last time must be huge.

Though stories of athletes dropping out as PA can’t go with them. Deaf blind lady who need full time support being told don’t worry we have one PA who doesn’t know you or how you communicate there to do with you are 30 odd others!! Not safe in the slightest

MarshaBradyo · 21/07/2021 06:46

Made me emotional too

Really good song and line

drspouse · 21/07/2021 06:50

Amazing, love the song too. I didn't get the red and blue balls though. Blush

It’s a wheelchair sport called Boccia with red and blue balls. The dream is each athlete having their worst nightmare. Something like that I imagine. So one flies off his bike, Ellie competes against herself, gets drown in balls.
