If you wanted to live in a small market town with good links to London where would you live please?

My dc are settled in various places across the uk, and the time has come for me to downsize. I don’t especially want to stay in the area where I now live, and as long as I can get to London fairly easily, I can go anywhere.

Please will you tell me where to go?! Or where you’d like to go if you could? Tia.

Central location, 1.20 hrs to lindon

Good road network

Theatre Birmingham
Great community with sports and activities
To take part in

Good restaurants, coffee shops

Countryside 10 Minutes away
Coteswolds on your doorstep

Petersfield is good for families about an hour into Waterloo or Clapham junction.

Banbury has good facilities, 40 minutes drive to Oxford, 50 minutes to London by train. Edge of the Cotswolds but much cheaper too!

Saffron Walden - train goes from Audley End

St Neots. Between Cambridge and Bedford and on the direct line to KX.

Staines. Has a proper market twice a week, a lively high street, is on the river and has good housing stock. Oh and 38 minutes into Waterloo.

Berkhamsted. 28 mins to Euston.

Grantham in Lincolnshire is 1 hour or less on the train - the surrounding villages are beautiful, good grammar schools and cheaper property than the Home Counties. Lots of Londoners have moved here over the last 10 years for the quality of life.

What's your budget?

Depends on what you mean by ‘good links’ and what your budget is but

• Surrey Hills towns (farnham, godalming, dorking etc) all have good links to london, airports, and surprisingly fast to the coast
• Winchester is lovely

Farnham, Winchester, Amersham, Beaconsfield, Lewes

Do research train times thoroughly! I moved somewhere in the West Country, and I'm a 20 minute drive from a station where there are lots of trains to/from London and a travel time of 1 hr 20. BUT no really late trains back, so you can't go to the theatre/have a jolly evening out and get home afterwards.
