A-ha, Erasure, Eurythmics, Pet Shop Boys. All big in the 1980s. What is your favourite song or songs from each ?

A-ha: Hunting High And Low
Erasure: Stop!
Eurythmics: Thorn In My Side
Pet Shop Boys: West End Girls

PSB in particular have been inventive and prolific and made many great records but in my opinion, they peaked very early with West End Girls.

If we’re adding the Communards, then Small Town Boy.

WorriedWishingWell · 18/07/2021 20:34

Erasure - Sometimes
PSB - Go West

@Hen2018 wasn't that Bronski Beat?

A-Ha; Living A Boy's Adventure Tale. Love it.

I don't know songs from the others Blush

AnoymousCoward · 18/07/2021 20:37

And whomever mentioned The Mighty Wah The Story of the Blues - I absolutely adore that song!

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/07/2021 20:39

If we're adding The Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues. We spent many a night, drunkenly murdering that one.GrinGrinGrin

DrCoconut · 18/07/2021 20:40

Erasure - respect, AHa - the sun always shines on TV, Eurythmics - here comes the rain again (very apt for the coming few days 😂) and PSB - it's a sin or always on my mind. The latter reminds me of club Tropicana at Manchester university in the 90s. If anyone else is a club trop veteran please comment as I don't know of anyone else to reminisce with.

Anjo2011 · 18/07/2021 20:53

A ha - Stay on these roads
Erasure - Respect
Pet Shop Boys - Se a vida e, that’s the way life is
Eurythmics - Thorn in my side

CathyorClaire · 18/07/2021 20:56

Erasure passed me by, sorry.

Pet Shop boys - It's A Sin/ West End Girls

A-Ha - The Sun Always Shines On TV

Eurythmics - Love Is A Stranger

Love any and all 80's. Best decade for music and films ever!

MaintainingPositivity · 18/07/2021 21:00

Aha - Sun Always Shines on TV
Erasure - Sometimes

Serendipitously, I've just read something about Wah! in Stuart Maconie's book and wanted to come and add it to The Whole of the Moon as perfect 80s pop. Fabulous.

@DrCoconut- Tropicana and every other club in Manchester between 1984 and 1992 when I moved away to Liverpool.

StepladderToHeaven · 18/07/2021 21:03

Pet Shop Boys - Kings Cross
Erasure - Ship of Fools
A-ha - Take on Me
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams

Yep. Was on the university jukebox. Spent loads playing it. Another favourite of the Waterboys is Red Army Blues. "I saw my first American, he looked a lot like me" analysed and over-analysed when pissed ridiculous and finding Russians and Communism both terrifying and vaguely sexy at the same time.

As do l!

But watch the video, the Mighty Pete sort of twitches when he’s dancing. Very strange.

I was in Manchester then! The Hac, the Ritz, The Venue, Berlin, Legends

Happy daze…

AnoymousCoward · 18/07/2021 21:09

Yes- I just watched the video for the first time...and wtf is going on there? Confused

xsquared · 18/07/2021 21:10

A-Ha Take on me. I quite like "Stay on these roads" too.
Pet Shop Boys What have I done to deserve this. Also like "Domino Dancing"
Erasure Wasn't really into them but the one that stands out most to me is "Sometimes".
Eurythmics Who's that girl - fun fact about the video, all current and past members of Bananarama appear in it.

Oooh so he does. His twitching is all out of synch with the beat.
MajesticWhine · 18/07/2021 21:11

Pet Shop Boys - West end girls / left to my own devices
Erasure - A little respect
A-ha - Take on Me
Eurythmics - Here comes the rain again

AnoymousCoward · 18/07/2021 21:13

Gingerwarthog · 18/07/2021 21:14

Yes to 'Red Army Blues' - Waterboys

  • brilliant live!
AnoymousCoward · 18/07/2021 21:15

And another club that was under an arch down the road at the side of the Cornerhouse, that used to play Ministry, NIN, Radiohead etc

I never went to Legends, and invariably ended up in the Venue when the queue was too long for the Hac. Venue always on a Friday. Ritz on Monday and Wednesday. Berlin was where, in early 1986, I first wore "trendy" leggings which as a New Thing didn't come in different lengths and I am long. So spent entire evening panicking trendy leggings would come out of little boot and ride up leg revealing untrendy skin. I'll add Playpen/42nd street on a Tuesday and one which came later under the railway arches (Fridays and Saturdays, can't remember name) Occasionally Jilly's and The Banshee though Jilly's was invariably a disappointment as one hoped for beautiful boys with gleaming locks but usually found hairy bikers in double denim.

AnoymousCoward · 18/07/2021 21:23

Yes- 42nd street, and 5th avenue too.

RobotandPenguin · 18/07/2021 21:25

Really hard to choose for every one of these. My choices may well change tomorrow.

Aha - Stay On These Roads
Eurythmics- Here Comes the Rain Again
Erasure- Oh L'Amour
PSB - Heart
