Anything I can do to help cat in this heat?

Silly question really as I know cats take care of themselves (and my previous cat didn't need any special treatment, although she did love to knock an ice cube around in a glass)

My 9 month old kit-cat has just been so pathetic the past few days ... is there anything I can do for him. The ice cube didn't work.

I have a pet pad but of course he won't use it.

In fact I'm beginning to think he doesn't want or need my help Grin

Do you have a fan?
My cat is alternating between lying flat out on the cool kitchen floor and plonking herself between me and the fan. I also pop an ice cube into her water regularly.

Going by her face, apparently the unreasonable heat is my fault.

My apologies, everyone.

We have a pedestal fan that we move from bedroom to living room but have bought another one so the day has it's own.
Also wet kitchen roll with cool water and wipe you cat over with it .

When my cat over heated I used a cold cloth to gently dab her paws and used a cool cloth all over. It helped her.

I should've said the underside of her paws - the little beans! But I know not every cat allows themselves to be handled in that way.

My cat is quite docile, so maybe a bad example, but I put him in the bathtub with an inch of tepid water and scooped some onto his belly, legs, face. If that sounds a bit hazardous I second the idea of wiping your cat down, maybe with a wet flannel, try and get an evaporation effect going.

Mine is currently lying on a self heating mat, whinging he's too hot Hmm
Every so often he flops in front of the fan. Repeat all day

With all my cats and dogs over the 30+ years of keeping pets I've always taken the outside on to the lawn and washed with cool/luke warm water - picked the cats up with one hand under the tummy and lowered them in and washed them with the other - they really don't protest that much and all get used to it - but I always handle my cats a lot - I do it calmly and lovingly and once they are out and on the grass they tend to lick themselves and seem very content. In hot weather I always do this - I use half a watering can of tap water with my springer spaniel - she sits or lies on the lawn and I dowse her down - I did this before I took her for a walk today - I take water to give her on the walk and keep a bottle of water to throw over her at the end before she gets in the car - I walk er 5 mins drive away. On hot days I might do my cats a couple of times a day depending on how lethargic they seem.

I just gave my old girl cat a drink of cooled cat milk.

She has two bowls of cool fresh water all day too, one upstairs and one down. But she's not eating a lot. Hopefully she'll eat more tonight.

She's likes the cool(er) kitchen laminate floor near the open door, which we keep shaded.

I feel sorry for her. She's pretty old.

Silky cat is just flopping about. She still wants to sit on our laps though and is offended that we are telling her it's too hot.

Desert cat though is the happiest he's ever been! He's a rescue from Dubai, doesn't have an undercoat and has been complaining about our weather practically since day 1. He's spending his whole time sunbathing and is the only member of the house who is enjoying it.

DramaAlpaca · 18/07/2021 19:13

Ours is enjoying the fan that DS has set up on his computer desk. Apparently he's in the way Grin

Crunchymum · 18/07/2021 19:22

Thanks for all the suggestions. He's just had half a pouch of wet food (with added water!) and I'll try a few of the suggestions on him later.

He doesn't mind water / being wet so I may pop him in a little luke warm water in the bath tub (like I've done for the kids Grin) and he allows me to handle him so I can try the water on his little paws.

He hasn't been out much or in the sun but he isn't the best water drinker in general.

I imagine I'll know when he is feeling cooler as that will be when he decides to run around like a nutter (last night this was 11pm Smile)

He isn't the most cat like of creatures, bless him, so I worry he doesn't know the right "cat things" to do to keep himself cool.
