How can I keep cool tomorrow during sports day?

Soubriquet · 18/07/2021 18:02

I’m attending my children’s sports day tomorrow and if it’s anything like today, it’s going to be horribly hot.

I will be able to have a seat, but there will be no shade as that is where the children will be sitting.

I don’t do well in heat but I really want to go. Im planning on taking a cold drink, and my umbrella to create shade.

What else can I do?

I cannot go to the store and get an hand held fan, so please don’t suggest this

Take a cool bag for your drink and keep a damp towel in there wrapped around some ice cubes. Put it on the backnof your neck as and when you feel the need. To be fair then umbrella is going to be your best weapon against the sun.

Soubriquet · 18/07/2021 18:06

I have a cool bag somewhere! I shall ferret it out. I have ice already so a damp towel will be a good shout

And yes I was hoping the umbrella will help stop me burning. I know I’ll look silly sitting there with my brolly but frankly I don’t care Grin

Fill a bottle 3/4 full with water and put it in the freezer overnight. Just before you go, put more cold water in. Transport it in the cool bag and it will make a huge difference. As well as having wonderfully cold water, you can put it on your wrists, your neck, or do as I do and shove it down your cleavage for a bit. Definitely a hat, too.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 18/07/2021 19:39

Umbrella is the way forward. I use mine like a parasol quite often.

TSSDNCOP · 18/07/2021 19:42

At cricket today I put my feet in the cool bag, which had ice packs but was otherwise empty.

Soubriquet · 18/07/2021 19:43

Thank you. I’ll do that.

I have a big umbrella and I love it. It’s my favourite brand (gorjuss) so any chance to show it off is a bonus for me Grin

I don’t have a hat, but I do have sunglasses which I definitely will be wearing as I have sensitive eyes when it comes to the light. I’ll get dh to find the cool bag as it’s in the garage and he knows where everything is in there and then I’ll stock it with nice cool things.

I’m hoping doing all this will stop me from getting sun/heat stroke which I do suffer from quite easily.

Frozen water bottle, small freezer blocks down your top, freeze your shoes, flannel wrapped in a freezer block and wear slightly damp clothes. These are my top tips. I really don't do well with heat ☺️

MinesAPintOfTea · 18/07/2021 19:48

Any chance of getting a hat? I’ve sewn one in the past.. or a damp scarf?

And yes to water frozen overnight and suncream. Linen or cotton dress that at least covers your shoulders. If there’s not forecast to be a breeze, make a folded card fan tonight (concertina, taped at one end and then fanned open at the other).

Extra water so you can damp your hat/neck/feet when you like.

And if you feel really rubbish, retreat to the shade for a bit

Soubriquet · 18/07/2021 19:50

I have no access to any shops until Tuesday so no I can’t get a hat and my sewing skills are non-existent

I also can’t move to the shade unfortunately Sad

The school are really nice to allow us to come to view the sports day (only one parent per family) but once we have been directed to our seats, we aren’t to move them. So it’s literally sitting where we are not getting up. Hence the umbrella

I like the idea of cool towels in the bag so I’ll be doing that, and I’ll make sure I’ve got some icey squash to drink too

Thanks for all the tips

Dont wear your skimpiest clothes.
Cover up - shoulders to knees as a minimum.
Keep drinking.
The temperature here is dropping tomorrow. Enjoy yourself.

I put a wet flannel in a freezer bag and put it in the freezer overnight until I have to leave (for cricket matches) It's lovely and cooling

Soubriquet · 19/07/2021 16:21

Thank you for all the tips.

I was still sweating so bad I thought I had wet myself at one point (horrible plastic chairs) but all the tips managed to keep me cool enough to bare it.

I came home and got into the pool fully clothed to cool down Grin

Dc had a fab afternoon doing their sports day and it was so nice to be able to watch it

I hope you didn't actually bare it! GrinGrin You did well to bear it, it's horrendous here.

Soubriquet · 19/07/2021 16:30

Oh yes. I gave the entire school a nice strip show Wink

The cool neckerchief is honestly brilliant, it makes such a difference. Just watch out for wet boob effect so be careful what you wear.

newnortherner111 · 19/07/2021 16:34

Lucky you having a pool!

Soubriquet · 19/07/2021 16:39

It’s only a small blow up paddling pool but it’s deep enough that I can sit down and it comes just above my waist

It was lovely. Not too cold but cool enough to help
