If you're not overweight or obese how do you cope with the heat?

I'm obese and I struggle. If you're not overweight or obese does the heat affect you?

I'm trying to lose weight but it's not going to happen overnight/during a heatwave so that's another summer to deal with.

P.s. I'm not a late night troll. I'm awake because it's 26.3c in my bedroom!

P.p.s this isn't a fat v thin debate!

I've lost over 8 stone and there is a massive difference this year. I no longer sweat and trying to get to sleep is much easier. It'll be worth it in the end. Good luck x

CrouchEndTiger12 · 18/07/2021 00:38

I'm not over weight. It isn't that big a deal to me. I don't get that sweaty and I don't find it difficult walking around or exercising such as cycling in it albeit at a slower pace.

I went walking for ages today. I was fine.

Terrible I'm exhausted and haven't slept right this week.
I stayed in today in my pj's.
Low end of normal bmi.
Soaking a face cloth in cold water as I type.

JovialNickname · 18/07/2021 00:42

I'm not overweight (although the top end of normal) and I so struggle with the heat! I swell up when it's hot, am sitting here with my big fat ankles and big fat hands. I get so jealous of women that look beautiful and wear pretty swimwear on holiday, I just look like a balloon! I've heard good things about tower fans though to try to cool the room down, have you tried one of those? I might think about getting one.

whatsoccuringnow · 18/07/2021 00:45

I'm overweight for my height but I'm only 5ft. I'm mostly OK except my hair is soaked and inner thighs and under boobs when I first wake up. Feels gross when I wake up, but doesn't keep me awake all night.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 18/07/2021 00:45

I grew up in Hungary where we have very hot summers and even April & May can be scorching.
I was slim until I was 23 and came to the UK (English biscuits & hot chocolate are a slippery slope!) but I always hated the heat.
I used to get bad migraines even as a child. my feet used to be very sweaty too - that's no longer a problem.
one year it was hot that I had my hair chopped off into a crew cut because I just couldn't stand the heat!

now we have ceiling light fans in every room and I have lots of 1 min rinse off showers (very hot ones) to cool down

We've got a Dyson one but it seems to just blow warm air around. I've got a damp top on now, I'm more concerned for DS who is in with me.

That sounds glorious, wish I'd done that!

I’m overweight, however I love the heat and it doesn’t bother me at all. I’m awake now due to my dh and teens gaming - not because of the heat.

LadyFuschia · 18/07/2021 00:53

Honestly didn’t think I it was ‘a Thing’... I am slim but not skinny, exercise a little but don’t diet.
This heat is no big deal; I find I sweat if I garden or walk a lot but just have a quick shower and carry on. Just a hot day is all...

SuperSecretSquirrels · 18/07/2021 00:55

I’m overweight, but have a ceiling fan in the bedroom. Bliss!

StripyGiraffes · 18/07/2021 00:55

I've always been slim and I love hot weather. I was ok even in a desert in 53 degrees.,I hate humidity however, and I think in the UK it often "feels" much hotter than it is because if it's warm it's almost always humid as well. Not as bad as in tropical countries, obviously! But it makes it much less pleasant than a much hotter day somewhere with dry heat. There's also nothing nicer in winter than curling up in thick jumpers and blankets in front of the fire and being toasty.

I also hate the cold. Air conditioned places dry my skin and even in several layers and a coat I will shiver. I'm really uncomfortable at any temperature lower than 20 degrees so I set my thermostat at home to that as a minimum winter or summer so it kicks in if it falls below that. But other environments like freezing trains or offices are awful, even in a coat and gloves and hat I an still freezing, and then cannot think about anything other than being cold.

That said, I've been to places where it's -20 but cold, clear sunny days with no wind and with the right clothing (ski/ mountain climbing gear!) that was ok. Just like the summer humidity, the wind and rain in the UK makes the winter much much worse that it should be in theory based on the temperature alone.

I am sure body weight/ shape must make a difference, I think I'm lacking much inbuilt insulation. Grin

StripyGiraffes · 18/07/2021 00:57

Also OP - not that I need this usually! But this trick helped my baby when they were small and it was especially hot/ humid by UK standards: If you get the ice blocks that you put in coolbags and put them in a bowl in front of a fan it makes homemade aircon. Smile

DrFoxtrot · 18/07/2021 00:58

I'm not overweight and I really struggle in the heat. Red faced, sweaty mess particularly if moving around, and not even strenuous exertion. I've always been at the sweatier end of the scale though Blush.

orangejuicer · 18/07/2021 01:05

Thanks all, great suggestions!

I live in Southeast Asia and am very slim and quite fit. I'm still very sweaty in the summers here. I just tend to wear clothes that don't show sweat, keep my hair off my neck, and accept it's hot. Oh, and use an umbrella as a parasol if I'm out in the direct sunlight for too long.

StripyGiraffes · 18/07/2021 01:29

Yes loose, flowy clothes are essential. One of the things I love about hot weather is the clothes actually, so much less cumbersome, feels much lighter and more natural wandering around wearing just one thin, loose layer.

Itsmeagainandagain · 18/07/2021 01:30

Yes the heat bothers me. I'm pale skinned so the heat and the sun does get to me, I cool down taking cool showers before bed then drip dry and head to bed.. My wet hair keeps me cool...
It's not just obese or overweight people that the heat gets too.

Also on this point I think the -20 was ok aside from the ski gear etc because obviously if you're outside in that you don't stay out for hours generally and also you're moving around. What's heinous about airconditioned offices and trains etc is that you freeze because you are sitting still. I used to have to keep a winter coat at my office to wear indoors in summer over my summer clothes when I arrived there! Hmm

I'm not overweight and I love the heat. My DH jokes that I'm solar powered. 35c+ and I'm in heaven. I might actually like England if it wasn't so cold all the time. I do sweat a lot so I'm limited in what I can wear, but I have hyperhydrosis and I'd much rather be warm and sweaty than shivering and sweating!
I absolutely hated going out to work. It was always cold unless there was a heatwave, but then everyone would start complaining about the heat and whack the aircon to blizzard 😭 I kept a small blanket in my desk and regularly wore gloves as my fingers would go numb while trying to type.

MercyBooth · 18/07/2021 01:54

Hated it at a size 28 Hated it at a size 12. I just havent got the disposition for it whatever my dress size.

I went beyond fingerless gloves and ordered and oil radiator to be delivered to the office to put under my desk. It was completrly unbearable before that.
