If you're not overweight or obese how do you cope with the heat?

I'm obese and I struggle. If you're not overweight or obese does the heat affect you?

I'm trying to lose weight but it's not going to happen overnight/during a heatwave so that's another summer to deal with.

P.s. I'm not a late night troll. I'm awake because it's 26.3c in my bedroom!

Wet socks! I'm overweight as well but invested in air con for the bedroom last year as our new build just absorbs heat and is sooo hot. Get a pair of sock soak them in cold water, wring them out and pop them on, will help cool you down

This sounds like a form of torture. Shock

I have to agree with above I was anorexic for many years and hated the heat, went up to size 20 and hated it also, now down to a 14-16 on my weightloss journey and hate it equally I'm abit better this summer after dropping over 2 stone and buying a massive fan

I'm very slim and hate hot weather. I'm ok with sitting around in it but as soon as I have to do anything...nope. Funnily DH is a little overweight and he's the opposite, very little tolerance for sitting around in the heat but he'll much more readily go out for a walk or bike ride even if it's roasting. Some of that I attribute to his skin tanning whereas mine burns so he doesn't worry about burning in the sunshine.

Howcanthisbe123 · 18/07/2021 05:15

I’m not obese and whilst I don’t like the heat so stay out of it, I don’t struggle with it.

I imagine I would if I was carrying around a really heavy box all day weighing 10kg though, so I can see how it’s a struggle for someone over weight in that sense.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 18/07/2021 05:21

I've gone from 15.7 to 10.13 over a few years. I'm ok in the heat now but when it's cold I can never seem to get warm!

cakeseeker · 18/07/2021 06:01

I've always been slim, I currently have a bmi of 18.5. I have also always struggled with the heat. It makes me feel ill and angry, and I am just hoping that this intense heat fades away again soon.

lljkk · 18/07/2021 06:13

I have BMI = 21ish since I was 24.
I have both struggled with and relished hot days as an adult.
I changed from "always too hot" to "mostly too cold" in my mid 30s.
Don't think I sweated more or less, or slept better/worse when either type of person.

Even as a 'always cold person', I soak my hair or wear wet t-shirts to make myself more comfortable, in truly hot conditions.

Due to a skin condition, friend won't bare legs in public, no floaty dresses. She was wearing leggings in heat yesterday. I would have boiled.

Caspianberg · 18/07/2021 07:11

Low bmi here. I don’t really sweat or get overly hot when it’s toasty, but I do easily feel faint or get a headache if I don’t drink enough water or in the direct sun even if it’s a short time. So always have floppy hat.

The uk is very humid though compared to many hot other places. It’s been 30 ish degrees most days here since May and doesn’t feel as sticky hot compared to when I lived in London.

LizziesTwin · 18/07/2021 07:25

I love the warmth, BMI around 20/21. I love not having to wear jumpers & jeans.

summerinthebigcity · 18/07/2021 07:33

I'm not overweight. The heat does affect me. I've been trying to eat a vegan diet on more days since last year and I've noticed that when I've eaten vegan for a few days, sleep in the heat is much better. I might still wake up but I go straight back to sleep and I wake up feeling rested.
(When I eat vegan I don't eat many packaged/ prepared vegan things, just stuff like pasta with tomato & olive oil, hummus, veg with coconut milk & spices, peanut butter, etc)

Riddo · 18/07/2021 07:35

I've been on a diet so am thinner than I was last summer but I still hate the heat. It makes me feel really ill and exhausted. I do have chronic fatigue syndrome though which I think is a contributory factor.

Cold flannels help plus running your wrists under cold water.

ViceLikeBlip · 18/07/2021 07:38

Bmi 24. I'm OK in the shade and/or not doing much. But I feel very unwell very quickly if I'm out in the sun or rushing around. I don't sweat much.

Couchbettato · 18/07/2021 07:48

OP I'm obese, but if you can afford it air con units are worth it even with a window feed to a freestanding unit.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 18/07/2021 07:56

I'm just overweight but my lung function is 50-90% of someone my age because of a condition.

As soon as it gets hot I really struggle with anxiety, but it does settle down.

This year what I have found essential is sleeping with a floor power fan. I also bought an air conditioner (live in a south facing new build).

I also strongly recommend a wet towel or light scarf around the neck during the day - amazon sell neckerchiefs. Keep well hydrated.

I also started walking more a few months ago- started with a step machine and built up to between 40m to 2 hrs brisk walking a day. Having stronger legs definitely helps, plus I have lost a few pounds.

Avoid too much dairy - I have max 2 glasses milk, pref lacto free and 120g yoghurt or cheese, as it makes my chest wheezy. Try to eat anti inflammatory diet. Sometimes I take an antihistamine at night - it helps sleep.

properg · 18/07/2021 08:02

@StripyGiraffes you sound like me, I love proper dry heat but hate the muggy heat in London. Under 20C at home is cold but I dislike the damp we have here in the colder months.

EssentialHummus · 18/07/2021 08:09

I usually love the heat but am battling as pregnant. Lots of ice water helps (like, litres), cold watermelon from the fridge, staying in the shade, keeping the windows and blinds closed on the side of the house with the sun coming in, then opening them at night.

bjjgirl · 18/07/2021 08:14

I have quite low body fat (can see my abs) the heat affects me in other ways, I am
Really comfortable in it but get cold when others put fans on / air con. I have a work cardigan for this.

I can't stand being hot when I work out thou and sweat a lot, I'm currently washing my hair twice a day after each workout - this in turns also cools me down

The heat affects my appetite hugely thou, struggle to be arsed to eat a lot

StColumbofNavron · 18/07/2021 08:19

I am about 5 stone overweight. I love the heat and always have, even as a size 8.

I’ve sweat more since having DC irrespective of size, though I’m sure I do sweat more as a bigger person but I do still enjoy it. My favourite thing in the world is still the beach but I am very lucky, I have zero hang ups about being in a costume etc and just love the water tbh.

I am also trying to lose weight and find summer a little easier because I like salads and things but find them difficult to eat in the winter when I just want warming comfort food.

PinkYarrow · 18/07/2021 08:23

I'm obese and have found this year fine so far as it's been quite cool most of the time. Previous years where we had several days of it being over 30 I didn't like. Do you have a loft hatch you could open? I've done that in previous years although not needed to yet in the SE

33feethighandrising · 18/07/2021 08:37

I cannot cope with hot weather. It clouds my brain and makes me feel uncomfortable, a feeling that's a bit similar to claustrophobic feelings.

When people say "isn't it a lovely day" when it's hot I smile and nod as I don't want to piss on their parade but I don't feel what they do. The first Autumn breezes are a blessed relief. They make my heart sing!

Warm with a gentle breeze is lovely, I love Spring. But hot? No.

I think whatever makes me like this is hereditary as my eldest is the same.

I used to be very slim and it was just the same.

This is me all over.

I said to DP yesterday I will never take rain for granted again.

I’m slim. Heat doesn’t bother me to the same extent it seems to bother some other people. I see temperatures proclaimed on here as intense or boiling hot that I regard as pleasantly warm. I’m loving the weather at the moment. Long may it continue.

PheasantsNest · 18/07/2021 08:54

I hate the heat. I have been all sizes from a 12 to a 22 and feel no different.

LadyCatStark · 18/07/2021 08:55

I’m on the lower end of a healthy BMI and I’m the opposite; I’m always cold! This weather is perfect for me except that it’s too hot for my run in the mornings 😭.
