If you're not overweight or obese how do you cope with the heat?

I'm obese and I struggle. If you're not overweight or obese does the heat affect you?

I'm trying to lose weight but it's not going to happen overnight/during a heatwave so that's another summer to deal with.

P.s. I'm not a late night troll. I'm awake because it's 26.3c in my bedroom!

I’m really not good in heat. I’ve only been out in the mornings and evenings when it’s cooler, unless it’s to go to somewhere with air conditioning.

itsgettingwierd · 18/07/2021 08:58

I think weather effects are often image to peoples own bodies but I imagine weight does have an effect too.

Well done on taking control. I am also overweight but have been losing it and exercising more for a few months and generally just feel healthier. I think that is also helping deal with the heat.

But I spent 6 years living abroad and this heatwave weather is a normal summers day there and think I'm slightly acclimatised! I very rarely get hot until it's at least 18°!

My hack is have a fan and out ice blocks underneath. As they cool in the room temp the cold air rises and the fan blows it at you. Instant AC!

purplesequins · 18/07/2021 09:01

I sweat a lot and feel faint if I don't cool myself down.

cold flannels on my feet/ankles help a lot.
and living close to a beach where I can dip my toes into the sea to cool down.

We have a Fan and that is bliss! Feel the heat and always have TBH. Not obese ,but maybe a little OW .Loose cool clothing helps as well

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 18/07/2021 09:04

I don’t think this is a fat/thin issue (within reason) so much as a body type. I’m overweight, have been obese and the heat doesn’t really bother me. Mum is slim and she can’t handle more than 22 degrees without suffering.

Snog · 18/07/2021 09:09

I can't handle the heat and have always struggled with it and my dd is the same.
Sometimes I sit with my feet in a bowl of cold water which does help for a bit.
Frequent showers are also good for a cool down. I have been known to soak a towel in water and sleep under it.

Roussette · 18/07/2021 09:14

BMI 26 so I'm a bit overweight.

Love love love this weather, I wish it was like this from May to October!

Walked 5 miles in the sun yesterday, yes I was hot, but it was so gorgeous out there. Don't burn, just go brown, I need a fan at night but that's about it!

bathorshower · 18/07/2021 09:16

Another one saying air conditioning - we got a free standing unit when I was pregnant, and have since installed aircon properly in the house. Expensive, but definitely worthwhile, not least as DH (even worse than me!) is wfh for the forseeable future.

MildredPuppy · 18/07/2021 09:23

Nice cool showers and going to bed with wet hair. I combine this with careful opening /closing of windows /curtains and a fan

WB205020 · 18/07/2021 09:25

I speak as someone who is overweight currently but losing weight. I’ve been thin and not struggled in summer. Being overweight I run hotter and sweat a lot more. Fat is a heat blanket basically and the more you have the hotter you feel. I can remember a few years ago we had a horrible heatwave but I was a lot thinner and didn’t mind so much. The last few years of being the size I am I hate the heat. Anything more than 21/22 and I find it so uncomfortable. I’m using it as further momentum to lose weight.

EverythingDelegated · 18/07/2021 09:28

I am overweight and a heat hater, I stay im the shade as much as possible as I hate the feel of sun on my skin, no strappy tops for me, I like to be covered up. Up to about 22° is fine anything hotter annoys me as I have to slow down, start waiting till the evenings for exercise or other activity.

Cool weather on the other hand I love, I don't feel the cold much at all, love aircon, virtually never need to wear a scarf or hat, only need to do my coat up if its below zero or windy or I'm standing still for ages watching something. I overheat very quickly again if walking with too many layers on and I can't bear overheating, I'd far rather be a bit cold.

MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 18/07/2021 09:34

I have lost 3 stone in the last year taking me from BMI 29.8 to 23. I always hated summer but I am finding it so much more tolerable this year. I really underestimated how much the weight affected it. I just felt overheated all summer, like wearing a jumper you can’t take off. On the flip side I was much colder this winter and found it impossible to stay warm.

crankysaurus · 18/07/2021 10:17

I get you, OP. For various reasons I've put on a couple of stone over the last year or so and dislike the heat even more now. Was chilling in the garden hammock at 10pm last night, it was lovely. If I could choose, I'd have the whole year as May, the perfect month.

ufucoffee · 18/07/2021 10:54

I'm fat now but used to be very thin and I was very sweaty then and am very sweaty now. My weight has had no bearing on my extreme sweating.

RacheyCat · 18/07/2021 11:58

People saying over 22°C is hot, I'm a bit surprised. I don't find it hot until it's about 30°C and really, it's only when it gets to 32-34°C that it's an effort. We have aircon but I set it to 28-29°C, just to take the edge off.

Before moving to Southeast Asia, I spent nine years living somewhere that was between -15°C and -30°C for five months of the year. Although I obviously coped, I found the real danger of getting too cold if you were outside for too long without enough insulation to be much harder to deal with.

I'm definitely a warm weather person.

megletthesecond · 18/07/2021 12:01

I'm not overweight and it doesn't bother me. I don't even like air con really.

WeAllHaveWings · 18/07/2021 12:10

I am fat now, but when slim the heat still affected me badly. After a few attempts in my youth I won't go abroad now as mostly too hot compared to where I live (Scotland).

Dark haired but I don't tan, just burn, then return to pastey white, get heat rash on arms, back and chest. Struggle to sleep in heat.

MercyBooth · 18/07/2021 18:14

@RacheyCat Try it in a first floor social housing flat.

ALongHardWinter · 18/07/2021 18:56

I don't cope well with the heat. When I was at my heaviest (nearly 21 stone and size 24/26) it was hell in the hot weather. Even at 21 degrees I was struggling. I have now lost 7 stone, and at 14 stone I'm still 4 stone overweight. But I've only found it slightly easier in the heat. As soon as it goes over 25 degrees,I'm sweating and suffering.

Tavannach · 18/07/2021 19:00

We keep all the curtains and blinds closed all day and open the windows a little in the evening so there's a through breeze.
And ice poles in the freezer Smile

Susannahmoody · 18/07/2021 19:03

Stay indoors between 11am and 3pm. Use air conditioning.

I'm slim and still follow these rules. I feel sick otherwise.

greatestdancer · 18/07/2021 19:06

I’m not overweight but I can’t cope in the heat at all. I like being out in the sun but I need to be in some form of shade or I’ll feel sick

orangejuicer · 19/07/2021 08:13

Well it's Monday folks, only a few more days to go til the temp goes down 1c!

OP posts:
RandomHomoSapien · 19/07/2021 09:13

Paddling pool in the garden, air con in the bedroom. A fan doesn’t cut it in this heat, it just circulates warm air.

Roussette · 19/07/2021 13:30

It's glorious here. Just walked along a tow path in the heat, yes I was hot when I got back, but it was so lovely.
