A 'keeping cool in this heat at night' top tip

PercyPigandMe · 17/07/2021 23:38

I know that the overwhelming majority of you will be fully aware of this tip but I mentioned it to a friend the other day and she was astonished. Had never heard of it so it made me wonder if she was the only one not in the know

Anyway, fill a hot water bottle and freeze it. Pop in bed at night and it stays ice cold all night long. Another tip is to soak a towel of whatever size you fancy in cold water and wring out. Use as a sheet at night

Any other tips?

I'm using the cooling mat I bought for the cat that she refuses to use interchangeably around my neck and over my legs. I couldn't sleep with a damp thing, it would make me pee myself...

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/07/2021 23:42

Get a sarong or any light cotton fabric. Wet it, wring it out very throughly, use it as a sheet with a fan blowing onto you. You'll be freezing in no time.

crispsinasandwich · 17/07/2021 23:42

Similar to op but I just fill a hot water bottle with cold water

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/07/2021 23:42

Urghhhh I can't imagine sleeping under a damp towel, sounds horrible. The cold water bottle works well though.

BlatantlyNameChanged · 17/07/2021 23:49

A cold water bottle is amazing. All of my DC were conceived at the wrong time of year so that I was massively pregnant in the summer months, DH used to make me a cold water bottle every night so I could cool down enough to sleep.

Seasidemumma77 · 17/07/2021 23:50

Bought 2 pet cooling mats from Aldi for £4.99 each. Have one on pillow and one on feet,.

Open the loft door if you have one, it makes a difference to the temperature in the house.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/07/2021 00:03

It doesn't in my house,it's hot as hell in the loft!

OnTheBrink1 · 18/07/2021 00:06

Put a running cold tap over your wrist (facing upwards) hold your wrist under the water for a few mins each
Give each child a cold wet flannel (wring out) and place over a bare chest when they are laying in bed.

PercyPigandMe · 18/07/2021 00:20

I like the sound of the sarong type fabric wrung in cold water

I've tired chillow type things and they just heat up too quickly . I have an air con unit - fine in day but far too noisy at night. Have a dyson fan and purifier but don't like a steak of air on me

Latest purchase is a neck fan! Good for aligning round neck when doing housework

Stream of air not steak!

I take an icepack wrapped in a towel to bed with me

I find that lying awake and reading Mumsnet while eating Breakaways is working for me... 😏

2018SoFarSoGreat · 18/07/2021 01:03

Does your Dyson fan not tilt? Tilt it upwards so that the cold air is not blowing onto you buy cooling the got air that rises. Works great for me!

Old standby. Just a cotton sheet and one leg out. Ahhh.

Fat fingersl, but maybe you can figure out my post even with the typos.

harverina · 18/07/2021 01:05

I have a fan blowing directly at me all night at the moment. It’s bliss. DH moans about the noise if he wakens up though 🙄

I couldn’t ever sleep on anything damp! It would need to be exceptionally hot for me to resort to that. Doesn’t the towel just end up feeling damp and warm?

I find flipping my pillow over just before I go to sleep helps too. Feels nice and cool.

I’ve resorted to just sleeping in my pants some nights recently (tmi!)

Spottysausagedogs · 18/07/2021 01:13

On Greece one night in ridiculous temperatures with no aircon I got up and took a cold shower in my t-shirt. Went back to bed, wet hair, wet t-shirt, just a cotton sheet over me and the fan on. Fell straight to sleep. It was absolutely fucking roasting mind. We had to keep the patio doors shut because of the mosquitos!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 18/07/2021 01:16

hot shower, don't dry off just go to bed dripping wet.
try to fall asleep before you warm up.

if you failed start again. it's more fun than just not sleeping!🤣

You sleep with it on you, not on it. And the evaporation with a fan going does the same job as sweat. So not warm and damp. It works well. I've used it in properly hot places like Australia and Fiji. It's science, innit?
