A 'keeping cool in this heat at night' top tip

102 replies

PercyPigandMe · 17/07/2021 23:38

I know that the overwhelming majority of you will be fully aware of this tip but I mentioned it to a friend the other day and she was astonished. Had never heard of it so it made me wonder if she was the only one not in the know

Anyway, fill a hot water bottle and freeze it. Pop in bed at night and it stays ice cold all night long. Another tip is to soak a towel of whatever size you fancy in cold water and wring out. Use as a sheet at night

Any other tips?

@Stompythedinosaur

Open the loft door if you have one, it makes a difference to the temperature in the house.
This is a good one but I've got a wasp nest in mine 🤦🏼‍♀️ May be next year

We freeze flannels and tea towels through the day and put them on the back of our necks in the day. Or damp kitchen rolls good. I'm so tired, barely slept at all.

There you go. It's ideal for moving about the house etc in this heat

The damp towel thing is brilliant. I know it
Sounds weird and uncomfortable but I love it. Just a small hand towel, wrung out and placed on my chest and stomach until my temp comes down. It really works

MistyFrequencies · 18/07/2021 08:45

If it's cooler outside than inside (often at night) then blow your fan towards your open window, rather than at you. Pushes hot air out, cooler air comes in. Am doing it right now as is 25 in my kitchen and only 17 out. Growing up in hot summers this was life saver.

BG21031 · 18/07/2021 09:05

Its the irony that to keep cool we turn on fans or aircon. Just the things that are contributing to record temperatures.

Many people can simply sleep outside. It is easy to arrange.

peridito · 18/07/2021 09:16

I'm with Rockbird on this one

lying awake and reading Mumsnet while eating Breakaways is working for me.

EileenGC · 18/07/2021 09:22

Adopt a Spanish timetable. Go out for dinner at 10pm. Stay outside until midnight-1am. Get back home, open all the windows and turn the fans on, sleep Grin

EileenGC · 18/07/2021 09:24

Also, get rid of the duvets! Sleeping on top of one - as suggested above - will still make you feel warmer than if it simply wasn't on your bed. Very very light top sheet (the almost see-through ones) are the only acceptable item of bedding you should use in summer. Fitted sheet is an exception to that!

I wrap an ice pack in a tea towel or pillow case and put it under my pillow so I can flip the pillow to the cool side as and and when needed. I have no problem with the picnic type but I found a soft one in the freezer yesterday which might be better.

Although last night DH slept in the spare room as he was going out for his HOBBY fishing at crack of dawn so I could have the fan on. Bliss.

This sounds like a wonderful idea!
WhereDidIGoNext · 18/07/2021 09:44

My loft is really boiling in this weather, so wouldn’t work for me

ElaborateSalad · 18/07/2021 09:54

You know the freezer block things that go in cool boxes? I stick one of those under my pillow

sherrystrull · 18/07/2021 09:57

Highly recommend a mobile air con unit. Ours was £75 from Homebase. It was an extravagance but so worth it.
It drops the temperature by about 8 degrees in half an hour. Close the door and shut the window and it stays cool all night.

Tinpotspectator · 18/07/2021 10:11

I'm using a flat cotton sheet instead of a duvet. That helps.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/07/2021 10:27

@sherrystrull that's an air cooler though,right?

sherrystrull · 18/07/2021 11:09

It's called a 'portable air conditioning unit' but yeah it just cools the air!

Emmelina · 18/07/2021 11:12

Sleeping under a damp towel is glorious! I know it sounds anything but. I need to be covered at night which in this heat is impossible, I believe I only slept at all last night because it was the soggy towel from my shower!

Sleep outside? No, thank you. I'd be eaten alive by the midges.

Also no good if you're disabled, pregnant, have kids....

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/07/2021 11:23

I'm trying to work out of it's an air cooler or a conditioning unit. I need something for the bedroom and that's a fab price!

AdobeWanKenobi · 18/07/2021 11:42

Be aware not all air con is created equal.

True air con will pipe out of the window like a tumble dryer and need a water intake emptied very occasionally. It will cool constantly with no need to touch it

'Fake' air con has you loading it with ice and basically blows air over the ice to cool the room. It's cheap and it works but as soon as that ice melts you're back to a fan.

If you can afford to spend £200ish on a basic air con unit then it will serve you well. I wouldn't be without mine.

Crunchymum · 18/07/2021 11:55

I read on another thread about people going to sleep in damp nighties Shock

BG21031 · 18/07/2021 12:04

@QuestionableMouse

Midges accepted. But disabled people, pregnant women and children can’t sleep outside?

What do people do when they go camping? It’s easy to buy a beach shelter and in dry nights like this sleep on a blanket.
