Does anyone remember doing these activities as a child?

I’m 32, and my dh who is 30 doesn’t remember doing any of these.

Cress eggs. (Doing these with the children tomorrow). This is where you get an egg shell, draw a face on it, sow some cress seeds inside, the and the egg grows “hair”.

Grass “potatoes”. You get some tights, stuff it with grass seeds, give it a nose and eyes, and the hair grows upwards giving them a funny expression.

Bean seed in a bottle. Get a plastic bottle and line with some paper towel. Put the bean seed in between the towel and the plastic so it’s visible. You can then see the root and the plant growing.

Yes did all of those.

Kanaloa · 17/07/2021 16:49

Definitely remember doing the one in a bottle at primary school, I remember all the plastic bottles lined up on the window ledge and getting told off all the time for playing with them instead of listening!

Horehound · 17/07/2021 16:50

I'm 34 and nope! But I did do cress in an egg carton with cotton wool or something.

And fat balls for birds in yoghurt pots

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 17/07/2021 16:50

Did that with my DC, but I am way older then you.

LizziesTwin · 17/07/2021 16:50

I did them all with my children (early 20s now). I did them as a child in the 70s.

Owlshouse · 17/07/2021 16:50

I did the first and the last

Angel2702 · 17/07/2021 16:50

Yes made cress eggs with my nieces the other day actually.

Horehound · 17/07/2021 16:50

Oh maybe the last one with the bean in a bottle actually!

CiaoForNiao · 17/07/2021 16:51

I'm 36 and did all of those as a child and with now teen dc.

Thesearmsofmine · 17/07/2021 16:51

I’ve done them all with my children but I never did them as a child.

Soubriquet · 17/07/2021 16:52

I remember doing them all but the bean in the bottle is the most vivid

I remember them all lined up with their blue paper towel Grin

Did similar things in Primary school, never did them at home. DDs do similar things in school and we did once attempt to do the bean seed one at home. Didn't work.

First and last yes, but when I grew bean seeds with my kids, we used a ziplock bag rather than a bottle and pegged them on the washing line.

I don't understand the second one. That would need a lot of grass seed surely? And what does it have to do with potatoes?

BertieBotts · 17/07/2021 17:01

I remember doing the cress egg at brownies, potato (or I want to say old tights filled with sand/soil?) at some point and defo a bean at primary school. And my sister doing them too.

I think it must have been old tights but it defo ended up LOOKING like a potato.

I bet DH wouldn't remember doing them - he's useless at remembering anything like that!

Holothane · 17/07/2021 17:04

No non of them.

Bumply · 17/07/2021 17:05

All of those, but I'm 58

PattyPan · 17/07/2021 17:07

I’m 26 and did cress on kitchen roll and something involving a bean in infant school. Never heard of the grass one!

We did peas instead of beans. Also grew cress on wet blotting paper (i believe you can grow it on a wet flannel as well, but never tried that)
GameSetMatch · 17/07/2021 17:13

Yes, they are staple childhood activities, hope your children enjoy!

Justlovedogs · 17/07/2021 17:19

Did the bean seed at primary school. Didn't do grass. Did cress name on blotting paper at Brownies (draw name in blocky writing, fill in the block with cress seed). Happy days! Smile

jeannie46 · 17/07/2021 17:20

No plastic bottles, tights, kitchen rolls in my day!
Eggs just coming back though so drew faces on them then ate them.

NothingEverChangesButTheShoes · 17/07/2021 17:50

The type of things I saw on children's TV and was desperate to do. I was never allowed. We didn't even make paper dolls because of the mess.
I've done them all with DD.

pinkfluffybunny · 17/07/2021 18:17

Yes! 😁. All at school. My children have also done them at school, and my son came home from nursery with a zip lock bag with 3 sprouting beans in just last week. Such fun.

Chihuahuacat · 17/07/2021 18:19

I did 1 and 3 - aged 30.

SirenSays · 17/07/2021 18:26

I never did any of this as a child. My young neice has done all of these. Her grass potatoes were hilariously ugly.
