mosquito repellent ideas for garden party

I'm having a family gathering next weekend and thought I might make get some citronella tealights and pop them in jars to hang off the trees etc. Stupid question alert...will the mozzies still be 'repelled' if the tea lights are in jars or will they just ...avoid them?

We live in Midge Central in Northumberland.

I've never sound citronella candles any use. Mosquito coils work though. Also use a decent repellent - Smidge or Nordic Summer are most effective in my experience.
