Settle an argument putting fuel in the car

What is the correct way to fill the car up?

1 - fill it til it clicks, or you get bored.

OR

2 - fill it til the £ is a round number. Go to the next round number of you go over.

Where I live, either a nice man or woman comes and asks you how much you want put in, and you sit quietly until he's finished and hen pay from your car window

OR

you push a button X number of times until it's the amount you want to pay and then it only fills up to that value.

Small town Europe... I can't remember the last time I played 'chase the 00's with a petrol pump.

ForestDad · 17/07/2021 12:16

Second click unless:

  1. Paying cash when aim for round number or
  2. Only have phone for contactless. Then calculate cost per mile based on mileage from last full fill-up.
Alwayswonderedwhy · 17/07/2021 12:16

What! You can go past the click? I thought that meant it was full. I always fill to the click so I have to go less often.

ViewFromTheTowers · 17/07/2021 12:17

Till it clicks but then I pull it out a bit and go again until it clicks again. I know roughly how much it will be costing anyway so if it clicks early I know it is a splash click and not a full tank click.

I never do it to a round number although I will do lots of other things until a clock says a zero or a five Grin

catsareme14 · 17/07/2021 12:17

What is this 'click ' you speak of ?????

mindutopia · 17/07/2021 12:18

I think it probably depends on your financial situation. When I was younger, I almost never put more than £20 in at a time because that was all I could afford in one go.

Now I fill it up til it clicks, usually around £80 per fill up, because I have the money to do it and don't want to come back again before I have to.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 17/07/2021 12:19

I usually put a half a tank in at a time and I don't give a stuff about round numbers. You're paying by card, what does it matter?

I also use random coloured clothes pegs and don't hang things up in pairs.

Driving around with a completely full tank increases fuel consumption (it's the weight).

RosesAndHellebores · 17/07/2021 12:20

Thread has reminded me of when I could fill up my Fiat 127 for £5.65.

Housewife2010 · 17/07/2021 12:24

I always fill it 'til it clicks so I don't have to refill it as often. During the first lockdown Ii got 5 months out of my tank (it's a small car). Usually I fill up every two weeks.

TroysMammy · 17/07/2021 12:24

With my old car I knew how many litres would give me a full tank without clicks. I also like the challenge of getting the £ at a round number. I've had my car a week and haven't needed to put petrol in yet.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 17/07/2021 12:24

Unless you're paying with cash and only have a tenner. Grin

Topseyt · 17/07/2021 12:24

@PeonyTime

Til it clicks, the slowly top up, ideally to the nearest pound, but sometimes nearest .50
That is my approach.
Datsandcogs · 17/07/2021 12:25

It depends how much fuel you use. I fill til it clicks and fill up at least once a week. If I put £20 per time I’d be there every day!

Beamur · 17/07/2021 12:25

There isn't a right way.

gogohm · 17/07/2021 12:28

Clicks, but paid monthly here and fill up monthly ish

SometimesIFeedTheSparrows · 17/07/2021 12:30

Mine clicks and the next minute pours diesel all over me so I have to stop on the first click.

However it's got a massive tank so once I'm up to about £90 I'm already bored shitless and my hand hurts so I tend to give up.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 17/07/2021 12:31

@PivotPivotPivottt

I'm on a budget so the most I've ever done is £30. I didn't know there was such thing as a click Blush
Same 😂
StartingGrid · 17/07/2021 12:31

Till it clicks, by then I'm usually bored, never thought you could go past the click, how do people get to hanging around waiting for 10 of them?!

NotImpossible · 17/07/2021 12:31

Try for a round number in the region of £20-30 depending on where I'm going. Be chuffed if I get something ending .00 (even better if it ends 0.00). Go to pay and realise the mints I pick up on the way throw everything off! No particular budget but I don't use the car enough to bother filling it all the way.

TeeBee · 17/07/2021 12:33

I generally put around £30 in because I don't drive much. Sometimes, when I'm feeling rebellious, I'll fill it til I'm bored and walk up to the counter with a swagger and a bill for something random like £37.54.

messybun101 · 17/07/2021 12:37

Why does it do the click when the tank isn't full?

Example - my fuel light came on. I was going to put in £15 which would have only taken it to a half tank but when it hit £12 or so it clicked. I kept going and actually ended up putting in £20

Does it happen when the petrol station need to fill up their pumps maybe?

Ughmaybenot · 17/07/2021 12:38

Until it clicks, always. I hate getting diesel, I don’t know why it bothers me so much but it does. And then when I pay, I feel disgruntled it’s cost me £80 odd 😂

Cushionsnotpillows · 17/07/2021 12:38

@HaveANiceFuckingDay

Until it clicks , then pull the nozzle out a little and put some more in until I can literally see the petrol sitting at the top

Bad idea. Petrol needs a bit of room for fumes to expand in the tank and in many cars the excess will be dumped out by the overflow so you're literally paying to put petrol on the road.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 17/07/2021 12:40

@PeonyTime

Til it clicks, the slowly top up, ideally to the nearest pound, but sometimes nearest .50
Exactly this!
Ilikeknitting · 17/07/2021 12:42

Fill it until it’s full.

What other way is there?
