Settle an argument putting fuel in the car

What is the correct way to fill the car up?

1 - fill it til it clicks, or you get bored.

OR

2 - fill it til the £ is a round number. Go to the next round number of you go over.

To around £30 here - any more than that and either of the cars will break down! If we go on a long journey we fill it until it clicks twice then it’s full.

I used to keep to the pound and would go to the next pound if I went over, but I’ve ocd so have trained myself (after cbt) to just roll with it.

HerbErtlinger · 17/07/2021 10:53

I'm on a budget. I put 10 litres in as that's how much I use for the week

Erictheavocado · 17/07/2021 10:54

Our local Tesco petrol station pumps allow you to pre-select the value of your petrol so you don't have to worry about stopping it on a round number.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/07/2021 10:54

Till it clicks.
We don't pass petrol stations often.

This is so handy! Where is this?
Chunkymenrock · 17/07/2021 10:58

I find if it clicks constantly when nowhere near full, inducing absolute rage as pp described above, just pull the nozzle out a LITTLE way, so it's not totally in. That seems to stop such sensitivity.

Katefoster · 17/07/2021 10:58

When I was budgeting I went to whatever number I could afford. Now I go to the click

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 17/07/2021 10:58

I don't use a lot of fuel so normally £10--.£25, but I don't care about a round number (why DO people do this? So anal) so something like £17.32.

Scrowy · 17/07/2021 10:59

Until it clicks. It's a 30 mile round trip to the nearest fuel station.

CommanderBurnham · 17/07/2021 11:01

I disproportionately detest filling up. So all the way to the click, and then some.

My car has a massive tank - 65litres so I'm not getting rid of it soon. And when I do the next one is going to be a hybrid.

Theunamedcat · 17/07/2021 11:01

About thirty five ish 8m not fussed about numbers ive only ever filled it to the top once and I didnt like the sensation when the handle clicked so I've never done it again 🤣

Fetasalad · 17/07/2021 11:01

I fill it until I'm bored of holding the nozzle... it drives my DH potty! Grin

warmfluffytowels · 17/07/2021 11:01

Until it clicks.

SquashMinusIsShit · 17/07/2021 11:02

When I was 17/18 and on a tight budget i would put £5 a week in, nowadays i fill.It up which lasts about 4 weeks (normally anyway, based on current driving its about 3 months)

DH normally has a longer commute so.would fill up weekly

Thecomfortador · 17/07/2021 11:04

If I'm not filling up I usually put a certain literage in and make that round, so 10 or 15 litres usually. Then you know it's the same amount as last time even if the price has risen slightly.

DecayedStrumpet · 17/07/2021 11:07

Nerd fact: The click is caused by the nozzle touching petrol and cutting out.
Can be caused by splashback rather than the tank actually being full so sometimes it helps to change the nozzle angle or squeeze it out more slowly.

I'm really not the type of person who puts extra effort in to keep things tidy, so it's clicks all the way for me

gamerchick · 17/07/2021 11:08

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba

neither. you keep filling it despite the approximate 38753 clicks because there's a problem nobody seems to be able to fix. The rage it induces lasts all day so typically that's my coffee free day
Turn the nozzle to the side a bit and then half trigger. Usually sorts it out for me.
NeedNewKnees · 17/07/2021 11:10

To the click.

nocturnalcatfreetogoodhome · 17/07/2021 11:11

I get bored very quickly.

I threw about £8.62 in earlier in the week just to get me to work and back. DH is taking the car out this weekend so he can fill it up. He fills it to the brim, I chuck a tenner in here and there.

I've always found there to be two types of people - those who fill up with a quarter of a tank and those who think a quarter of a tank is full, I am the latter.

Snoken · 17/07/2021 11:12

I always have a little competition in my head to get it to a round number. Not so much for financial reasons, more just for the winning. So I want it filled up, but if I estimate it will cost me £50 until it clicks, then I will aim for £45, for example.

EmpressSuiko · 17/07/2021 11:13

We only ever put £20 in, we have a stir it budget so can’t afford a full tank.

SusannahSophia · 17/07/2021 11:13

Back in the day I’d put exactly £20 in, because I could slap a twenty on the counter and not have to wait for change, otherwise I’d be late for work. It took me a few years when paying by card not to worry about making it exactly £20. Nowadays I stop at around £50 and pay at the pump with my card.

toastantea · 17/07/2021 11:13

I fill to the click. I know someone who then pulls the nozzle out but by bit and fills until you can see the fuel at the entrance Confused

lljkk · 17/07/2021 11:15

until clicks... apparently there can be aspiration (you lose more fuel back into nozzle than you gain) if you keep trying to round upward in little spurts. Don't do it.

Indoctro · 17/07/2021 11:16

@HaveANiceFuckingDay

Until it clicks , then pull the nozzle out a little and put some more in until I can literally see the petrol sitting at the top
Please don't do this. This is what causes many motorcycle accidents. The excess petrol gets dumped out the tank by the overflow and ends up on the road . Some poor motorcycle comes along and skids on it

Only full till it clicks, there after it will be dumped out your tank.
