What is the correct way to fill the car up?

1 - fill it til it clicks, or you get bored.

OR

2 - fill it til the £ is a round number. Go to the next round number of you go over.

Fill until the first click (first real one when it's plausably almost full), then try and get the next round number. If it clicks a second time, give up.

MotionActivatedDog · 17/07/2021 11:16

I do both. If I’m skint I’ll just do to the £ I can afford. If I’m filling up then I fill to the click.

ForkedIt · 17/07/2021 11:16

Fill up until bored usually (big tank), but I also don’t like to fill it to the top because I have this idea that I’m paying to haul around a heavy tank of petrol and that will decrease my mpg. I’ve never actually researched that theory though so its probably totally wrong!

brittleheadgirl · 17/07/2021 11:17

@PivotPivotPivottt

I'm on a budget so the most I've ever done is £30. I didn't know there was such thing as a click Blush
Same! What is the 'click'? Budget isn't mega tight but I don't drive far, just short local journeys so £15 or £20 always seems extravagant enough!
newnortherner111 · 17/07/2021 11:17

I only have a hire car on holiday. So it is until the first click no more given the full tank requirement.

anon12345678901 · 17/07/2021 11:20

I do it until it clicks which is around £50. If I was on a budget I'd be watching the number to what I could afford that week. Don't go over the click though.

RosesAndHellebores · 17/07/2021 11:22

Until it clicks. Why would I waste my time visiting a petrol station more often than absolutely necessary (obviously unless on a budget). Don't care about round pounds because I inevitably pick something up as I pay, coffee, mints, milk, water, etc.

coogee · 17/07/2021 11:24

To the click and the a bit more if I can round the numbers off.

xyzandabc · 17/07/2021 11:26

@HaveANiceFuckingDay

Until it clicks , then pull the nozzle out a little and put some more in until I can literally see the petrol sitting at the top

knittingaddict · 17/07/2021 11:27

Till it clicks.

SockQueen · 17/07/2021 11:29

When the tank is full, the handle on the nozzle clicks and petrol stops flowing. You can squeeze again to get a little more in but not always a good idea.

I have a long commute so fill up completely most weeks. If I did just £20-30 a time I'd be topping up constantly!

Zilla1 · 17/07/2021 11:31

Fill until both the monetary and volume are prime numbers and make an attractive semi-prime.

GreenEyedDevil · 17/07/2021 11:34

Till it clicks and then up I keep clicking to round up to the next pound.

RampantIvy · 17/07/2021 11:46

Till it clicks. I do a lot of motorway driving.

Flamingosarentreal · 17/07/2021 11:50

Until the pounds and pence are the same as my door number

TheCouncilDontHelp · 17/07/2021 11:52

Until it clicks?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 17/07/2021 11:54

Just until the cashier isn't looking then drive away as quickly as possible! Grin

Not really...Number 2.

SirGawain · 17/07/2021 11:55

It is wasteful and potentialy dangerous and harmful to your engine to overfill your tank.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/07/2021 11:56

Til Ibget bored.

If it's a very efficient pump then I'll fill it as its quick. If it's a fiddly pump that keeps cutting out I do 10/20.

UnfinishedBunting · 17/07/2021 11:58

Wow, I'm pretty sure the click feature was designed for a reason - I had no idea that people tried to fill more after the clicks.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 17/07/2021 11:58

Until it’s full, never let it get below half a tank so doesn’t take long and prefer the peace of mind.

Itstheprinciple · 17/07/2021 11:59

I aim for £25. If I go over by a few pence, I don't keep going.

ElephantOfRisk · 17/07/2021 12:04

Fill till it clicks, don't pay in cash so the number is irrelevant and I'm not on a budget. It takes about £35-37 from the light coming on until full. I can drive hundreds of miles on the first quarter tank and then about 150 miles for the other 3 quarters - it's not very accurate!

Hoppinggreen · 17/07/2021 12:07

I usually just fill up but if I am trying for an exact amount and go 1p over the then go to a random number over so it looks deliberate

Bitchysideisouttoplay · 17/07/2021 12:12

If it's the start of the month I fill up the car till it clicks. If it's toward the end of the month and I am in a budget I go to the local tescos garage and you can select how.much to you in, so £5, £10, £15 etc which stops the whole issue of trying to get a round number.
Also as my dh doesnt drive he never fills up the car and hasnt cottoned onto this, and may possibly be amazed how I can get it exactly right everytime 🤣🤣
