Infected tooth - literally cannot get an appointment

Woke up this morning with an infected tooth. It's due to be taken out next week. I've tried my dentist who can't see me until Tue and I've been sat on the phone to 111 for over 40mins.

All I need is an antibiotic prescription. Generally not sure what to try next - any ideas?

You have my sympathy. I had this on a Saturday. My dentist had no out of hours and 111 said there was no emergency dentist. They told me to take painkillers and "go to A&E if your face swells up so much that your eye closes".
I got antibiotics on the Monday from my dentist.

God that's terrible. I hope you're okay now!

Can you afford to go private? I had similar before Christmas and went private the same day. It was worth every penny and I've switched there permanently now.

I would call your dentist again and say you're worried about a swelling over the weekend and just need some antibiotics. If the receptionist says no get her to check with the dentist. Receptionists are always sending people away when they should be seen it drives me mad. You're going to struggle to find someone on a Friday afternoon so I'd deff try them again

QuestionableMouse · 16/07/2021 13:01

I've got nowhere with 111 (got to an hour and I got cut off) so yes, will try my dentist again.

I’ve called my dentist and they’ve written out a prescription for collection without seeing me many times Sad

I had this recently, if you try an online pharmacy and say you have bacterial vaginosis then you'll prescribed the correct antibiotics to treat the dental infection... not ideal but it's exactly what I had to do - the online pharmacies won't prescribe for dental problems

QuestionableMouse · 16/07/2021 13:07

I might have to try that but unfortunately I can't take metronidazole (I had a very odd reaction to it)

Ah.. don't do that then!

SilverOak · 16/07/2021 13:07

Private dentist. NHS is seeing virtually nobody!

Bizjustgotreal · 16/07/2021 13:24

I had this last week. All you need is a 10 min slot. Call them again and really let them know that it's incredibly painful. Let them know that you can't sleep or eat.

Hope it gets better soon!

Try salt in warm water and gargle then spit out. Do it after food. Maybe 6 times daily.

this was pre-pandemic, but when DH broke a tooth a couple of years ago and we didn't have a dentist because we'd just moved, he was able to get an appointment at some kind of emergency NHS dental clinic - I remember it involved a lot of phone calls and people calling him back, but he only had to wait a couple of days for an appointment. might be worth googling to see if your area has one?

QuestionableMouse · 16/07/2021 15:09

Had no luck at all with 111.

Going to ring my dentist again. The gland under my jaw is really sore and I genuinely don't feel well.

Goldensealherbsl tincture
Use as a mouthwash
Rub on infected gum
Do it till pain disappears

QuestionableMouse · 16/07/2021 17:36

Thanks.

I have an appointment for 9:30 tomorrow. I can't wait until they take the damn thing out!

Thank you! I have a seven day course of antibiotics and I'm already feeling quite a bit better.
