So I went to buy an item off a fairly well known shopping site (furniture type stuff) I selected the item and went to checkout. when i put my email in it said you already have account ( I did buy stuff off them years ago) So obviously couldnt remember the password and asked for a reset.
The email to reset included my name with a middle name I dont have.
So I reset password. Paid for goods and when checking confirmation email noticed it was £30 cheaper than expected so I logged back on and checked the account and there was a £30 credit on the account which had been applied to my purchase from whoever had been using my email address from this site. I changed the account name and address back to mine and set a strong password.
So should I try and find the person who had used my email or should I just think cheeky fucker gets what they deserved using my email address

It's the store you should tell. And it could be an honest mistake by the store when inputting the email address, or giving the credit to your email address in error or whatever.

Then it wasn't YOUR email address was it?

Clearly you've used someone else's credit, so of course you should contact customer services immediately.

Yes, it sounds like you've been an absolute idiot OP and used some one else's email address.

The email to reset included my name with a middle name I dont have.

So it wasn't your email address then, was it?!

reesewithoutaspoon · 16/07/2021 00:31

Of course it was my email. the password reset was sent to my email.
It just said Dear jane may doe rather than Jane doe.
Its not the first time I have seen this persons name on a shopping invoice but up to now I just assumed it was a scam or phishing email and have ignored them. but it looks like they do actually exist and have been registering at shopping sites using my email address

But surely for the op to reset the password it would have had to email her a link for her to accept. Therefore she must have access to that email Inc the email password.?

If your email is your name maybe someone with a very similar email address as name is similar and inputting it wrong or company have.
I once received some emails that were not for me and turns out email address should of gone to was just one letter different to me

I've had similar OP, someone with the same name as me (neither my first name nor surname are popular names so there aren't many of us around) has used my email address for all sorts of things. It started with orders of flowers, then candles, then sofas and even her solicitors for moving house!

I was concerned it was a scammer the first time and did what you did ie reset the account with a strong password.

I also googled the name and address and a record for someone of that name in that area did come up which was reassuring. With the bigger things (sofas and solicitors) I emailed the companies to say my email address had been used in error and they should contact her using other means.

I have assumed that, very boringly, she must have a very similar email address to mine (I have the "original" format of [email protected], eg she may have an underscore in hers) and just keep typing it wrongly.

halesie · 16/07/2021 01:52

And yes absolutely I would return the money!

How could it not be OPs email address when she was able to get the reset email from her email inbox? Hmm
