What was this children's book - late 70s/early 80s...

I had a book as a child. I'm not going to give you much to go on I'm afraid...

It was a landscape book, bold colours, about a witch. One of those books with cut outs so it looked like one thing on one page but you turned it over and it became something else on the other. I think one of the pages had a cut out so that, when you turned the page, it trapped an animal (not sure it was a bird) in a cage.

Any ideas..??!

If anyone is going to know you lot are - a few years ago, MN identified a painting I'd misremembered and so described appallingly! 🤣

I have no idea but just to say, I didn’t think those kind of “pages with holes in” existed in the 70s or 80s?

It's not one of the Meg and Mog books is it?

toastantea · 15/07/2021 22:00

Meg and Mog?

DaxtheDestroyer · 15/07/2021 22:01

The witch and bold colours makes me think of Meg, Mog and Owl but I don't think I've come across one with cut out pages.

I don't think that is it, but I think I recall the one you mean!

Echobelly · 15/07/2021 22:06

Ah, or was it this - I asked my husband and we both had this one, and remembered the a page which turned 'ghosts' into sheets in the washing machine!

We have a Jan Pienkowski (illustrator for Meg and Mog) haunted house pop up book from this sort of era. It doesn't have a bird in a cage but they (I keep meaning to google whether Jan is male or female) may have done others. Definitely cut outs though.

I don't recall the front cover and don't remember it being bright yellow but the illustrations look very familiar!

Certainly the same illustrator if not the same book!!

Thank you! I'm going to investigate further...

DH used to make pop up books at uni. He spoke to Jan who is a man pronounced Yan.

As for the book the op asks about I’m not sure.

MidnightSilence · 15/07/2021 22:18

This is it!! My god, you lot are bloody amazing!! 🤣

Thank you!

Cross post.

Echobelly · 15/07/2021 22:25

Yay! DH and I both had the ghosts one growing up, but it sounded like it must be the same creators.

Catawaul · 15/07/2021 22:31

I love MN for book sleuthing!

MidnightSilence · 15/07/2021 22:31

I like the sound of the ghosts one. Funny isn't it? I've thought about that book so many times over the years!

I'm amazed you remember them so well!

I loved the Haunted House one too. So much that I bought myself another copy about 20 years ago.
