If your child has been diagnosed with ASD/autism/developmental delays - did you have pre-eclampsia during that pregnancy?

Just the above really. I have stumbled across a few studies which have drawn minor links between the 2 (also ADHD) and so I’m curious to see if anyone can relate?

I had PE with my first and whilst he doesn’t have autistic traits, he is slightly delayed developmentally (speaking, mostly, physically, definitely on time) and he shows signs of ADHD. Has done since very young.

Currently pregnant with number two and because of previous pregnancy, they’re obviously on high alert for PE again

My son has ADHD and he had a traumatic birth.

Not so much for me, but for him it was.

All the doctors we have ever seen have with regards to his health have done a 🤔 response to this as though there's a possible link.

But not PA

Xmasbaby11 · 15/07/2021 22:30

No.

One ASD, one NT. Don't think anyone in the family is autistic but DH was older (45) which I've heard can be a factor.

Foxhasbigsocks · 15/07/2021 22:32

No PE but 1 dd with likely adhd and asd, one dd with likely adhd

Yes i had PE twice with both my pregnancies but only my son has Autism.

milkjetmum · 15/07/2021 22:37

No pe but did sometimes wonder if difficult birth + lots of waters was linked. But really dd has traits which are visible in our family tree, she just has all of them at once!

luckymagnoliatree · 15/07/2021 22:41

Nope. DS1 has GDD, speech delay & he is small for his age. Not sure why, so far any tests/checks by docs have come back normal. Wonder whether the geneticist will find a reason but we may never know...one of life's little mysteries so far!

Sickoffamilydrama · 15/07/2021 22:41

Nope but clearly genetic both sides of our families have autistic children and adults not apparent when we decided to have kids or the kids weren't born

From my understanding of this because DH has been part of a few genetic studies for various problems yes as he said himself he's a genetic freak weirdly one geneticists got excited about his Nordic appearance but it was because they could trace back a spinal problem in his family to Vikings which is kind of cool.

It's so complex that whilst they may not find something it doesn't actually mean they're isn't a genetic cause just that they haven't found the right genome yet.

Some of these posts are really interesting ... don't want to hijack this thread so have started another one - would be grateful if anyone could help - thanks.

For those with children with ADHD, with hindsight what were the early signs? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4297950-for-those-with-children-with-adhd-with-hindsight-what-were-the-early-signs

Same @Sickoffamilydrama, autism is rife throughout my family and there is definitely a genetic link there.

Ikeameatballs · 15/07/2021 23:30

Yes, severe PE and HELLP syndrome with dd who has ADHD but my illness led to her prematurity. I strongly believe that her prematurity combined with a genetic tendency caused her difficulties rather than the PE in itself.

No. Fairly certain adhd is genetic as is autism.

2 autistic children. I have low BP.

southern82 · 15/07/2021 23:58

Yes I had PE in my pregnancy and my son is autistic

TheWindOnTheMoon · 16/07/2021 05:29

PE in both but only diagnosed in second. Both DC autistic, youngest has ADHD traits too.

5zeds · 16/07/2021 07:35

My understanding is that some types of autism are “highly heritable” rather than “genetic” and that it was unclear how much of that heritability was due to genes and how much environmental. Presumably that is exactly what OP is curious about? Her thoughts presumably run along the lines “did PE cause my child’s autism?”. I’ve often thought the same about the steroids my child had to help develop lung function before birth.
