You can never spend too much money on…

My old boss used to say “you can never spend too much money on a paint brush”. Perhaps badly phrased, but what he meant was “buy the best paintbrush you can afford” as according to him, a cheap paintbrush will leave hairs in the paint and a bad finish.
I know most people would agree that a pair of jeans is another one- worth paying a bit more for a pair so they don’t sag and bag after one wear. Take the cost and divide by the number of times you’d wear them and suddenly they’re not expensive anymore.
For me, I would advocate buying the best chopped tomatoes you can afford, as I have recently switched to a more expensive brand and my cooking has been revolutionised! No more adding sugar to a sauce, no more acidity.
So, it got me to thinking, what other items should I not be economising on? What every day item is worth spending as much as I can afford?

The pesto reply has made my day.

We’ve got Global knives and WMF knives. We keep them sharp and when I go to my daughter’s and have to use her crap knives, I can’t believe the difference.

Coats
Winter boots
Car seats
Childrens shoes ( for toddler DS would rather buy one decent pair that lasts per size)
Microwave
Tumble drier

You are much more likely to cut yourself with blunt knives because you end up using more pressure and they slip and slide instead of cutting.

I never understand why anyone buys pesto, it can be made in the time it takes to boil the pasta, you just put basil, some garlic cloves, pine nuts, parmesan, pecorino and olive oil in a food mixer and blitz it. And there's so many delicious variants, my kids are obsessed with wild garlic pesto and I have to make loads of it and freeze it so we can eat it for a longer season.

Oh yes @JaninaDuszejko I've consistently got fresh basil, pine nuts (a fiver a bag in my supermarket) and pecorino (natch) languishing in my cupboard/fridge. SO simple to just whizz it all up whilst Jocasta practices her arpeggios in the drawing room.

@Lemonmelonsun expensive hair straighteners are a must if you have awkward hair. I’m currently in love with Steampods

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 15/07/2021 20:06

Big bags and condoms - cheap ones end in a big mess

Lemonmelonsun · 15/07/2021 20:07

Walking/hiking kit if you're so inclined. I've slowly invested in excellent kit over time and it's been a v wise choice.

HasaDigaEebowai · 15/07/2021 20:10

Classic mn - by the end of this thread it will be entirely about the cost of home made pesto..

ShowOfHands · 15/07/2021 20:11

A decent lens for your camera.

Paper. The cheap stuff just gets lodged in the printer or the ink bleeds through when you write on it.

Pritt stick. The cheaper imitations dry up or don't stick.

Post-it notes. The cheaper they are, the less they stick.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 15/07/2021 20:42

Walking boots.

MarianneUnfaithful · 15/07/2021 20:43

Proper breathable waterproof waterproofs.
Walking boots
Walking socks
Rucksack
Tent
Cool box

And

Pesto
(As in a tub from the chiller cabinet rather than a jar Wink )

This is peak MN. I love food and cook almost everything from scratch but by the time I’ve found basil, paid £6 each for pine nuts and pecorino, splashed out another £8 on olive oil I really don’t want to be arsed with scrubbing the little bits of the blender.

You beat me to it Grin

Pesto was one of the only things my three fussy little DC would all agree on when they were little and I must have made literally gallons of the stuff over the years, at eyewatering costs, so that at least there would be some kind of fresh greenery going into them.

But jesus, can you honestly not understand why people might also pop a jar of 80p pesto into their trolley in Aldi?
