You can never spend too much money on…

My old boss used to say “you can never spend too much money on a paint brush”. Perhaps badly phrased, but what he meant was “buy the best paintbrush you can afford” as according to him, a cheap paintbrush will leave hairs in the paint and a bad finish.
I know most people would agree that a pair of jeans is another one- worth paying a bit more for a pair so they don’t sag and bag after one wear. Take the cost and divide by the number of times you’d wear them and suddenly they’re not expensive anymore.
For me, I would advocate buying the best chopped tomatoes you can afford, as I have recently switched to a more expensive brand and my cooking has been revolutionised! No more adding sugar to a sauce, no more acidity.
So, it got me to thinking, what other items should I not be economising on? What every day item is worth spending as much as I can afford?

MummyJ12 I am allergic to dust mites (and every other airborne allergen I was tested for) I can't sleep on anything other than a feather pillow. I take antihistamines to sleep.....but ive also bought a special thick velvety pillow case that goes under your normal pillow case. Can't remember what it's called but it works.

@MiniTheMinx thanks for the tip! I’ll have to look into that….
I wonder what is so different about cashmere? I still find it itchy but I don’t look like I have some kind of disease when it’s been near me!

On the pesto front, some of it is made with cashews instead of pine nuts as a cost saving which is a problem if you have a nut allergy like we do here.

Bras, Olive Oil and fair trade coffee are on my list.

@MummyJ12

I’m exactly the same as you with wool *@peaceanddove*. My husband thought I was making it up because I only wanted cashmere then he saw what a wool picnic blanket did to me just being sat on it!! 😂
It's so annoying isn't it? I love the colder months and would love to wear cosy, lambswool jumpers. Every year, I optimistically buy one hoping it won't itch. It always does.

There is not a lot on this list that I actually buy. I'm obviously strange...
Yes to decent kitchenware. Pans, knives etc. They will last a lifetime.
Pesto I buy by the jar. It limits portion sizes for the teenager.
I buy cheap trainers, as after about 6 months, they are smelly and dirty as well as worn out.
Most of my house is fitted out with decent quality second hand things. Clothes, furniture...
Dont like scented candles. Give me a migraine

Dont drink coffee. Or tea.
Dont have a dishwasher, but do use fairy liquid.
Dont have a blender. Would find too many of dd fingers in it.
Always had good fitting car seats. First one was passed down from my brother.
Buy what you need, at level you can afford.
And how long you want it to last.
I dont want to keep smelly trainers for years. I like having fresh ones. So I choose a cheap pair I know fit my funny shaped feet.

Good pesto

I never understand why anyone buys pesto, it can be made in the time it takes to boil the pasta, you just put basil, some garlic cloves, pine nuts, parmesan, pecorino and olive oil in a food mixer and blitz it. And there's so many delicious variants, my kids are obsessed with wild garlic pesto and I have to make loads of it and freeze it so we can eat it for a longer season.

Money is best spent on boring basics that are used all the time until they are worn out. So underwear, kitchen knives, towels, mattresses, etc. Things that are used rarely or are not essential are best bought second hand like party dresses, champagne glasses, art work, vases.

Because sometimes when you want to make the world's easiest dinner (pasta pesto) you just want to open a jar, not go to the shop to buy fresh basil, garlic clovers, pine nuts, parmesan and pecorino then blitz them?!

Baking trays. Thin ones flex as they heat up.

Any pesto is good pesto so I make if from wild garlic, mixed nuts and cheddar sometimes!
