You can never spend too much money on…

My old boss used to say “you can never spend too much money on a paint brush”. Perhaps badly phrased, but what he meant was “buy the best paintbrush you can afford” as according to him, a cheap paintbrush will leave hairs in the paint and a bad finish.
I know most people would agree that a pair of jeans is another one- worth paying a bit more for a pair so they don’t sag and bag after one wear. Take the cost and divide by the number of times you’d wear them and suddenly they’re not expensive anymore.
For me, I would advocate buying the best chopped tomatoes you can afford, as I have recently switched to a more expensive brand and my cooking has been revolutionised! No more adding sugar to a sauce, no more acidity.
So, it got me to thinking, what other items should I not be economising on? What every day item is worth spending as much as I can afford?

Defo agree re good quality high thread count bedding - gamechanger. Also pet food - much better for their health. Hair colour - doesn’t ruin your hair.

Horses- it costs just as much to keep a good one as a bad one!!

I think the same with puppies tbh in the sense that research and probably go on a waiting list for a well bred, health tested puppy from an experienced breed enthusiast who will provide a lifetime of back up and support. The purchase cost pales into insignificance compared to the costs over a lifetime - and the lifetime costs are likely to be cheaper with a healthy dog!

I disagree about the horses

My auntie spent 20k on a beautiful thoroughbred. With beautiful parents. Well known. Has cost her A fortune in vets bills from kicking shit. Bloody spooking at everything. Resulting in running into a wall!

I had W gorgeous Arab/new forest. Was free. She lasted till she was 35. Bomb proof. Didn’t get cushings till she was 33. Sadly. But she was a true delight who I miss every single day!

Mattress, duvet and pillows. Shoes for the comfort factor.

@PegasusReturns

i never understand why anyone buys pesto, it can be made in the time it takes to boil the pasta, you just put basil, some garlic cloves, pine nuts, parmesan, pecorino and olive oil in a food mixer and blitz it

This is peak MN. I love food and cook almost everything from scratch but by the time I’ve found basil, paid £6 each for pine nuts and pecorino, splashed out another £8 on olive oil I really don’t want to be arsed with scrubbing the little bits of the blender.

Couldn't have said this better myself....

If you want sharp knives you need a decent sharpening kit. Something like this. Lansky Deluxe Knife Sharpening System https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000B8IEA4/ref=cmswwrcppapiglttfabcP0CR8BJA974VP1G7GVRK
Bargebill19 · 15/07/2021 19:48

@FizzyPink. Honestly- go to a really good shopping supplies shop and handle them. It really is worth it. Knives find you, a bit like Harry Potter Wands.

Balsamic vinegar should have grape must as the top ingredient. I think! Anyway, not vinegar!

I would love a nice set of knives but I worry about slicing a finger with good sharp ones! ConfusedGrin
