I gave my notice to vacate a rented house back in February, but due to my new house falling through, I had to retract this noticeca couple of weeks later.
The agent had already lined up new tenants which obviously, unfortunately meant they had had to go and look elsewhere.
I'm now being told the switch they made for gas and electric wasn't cancelled in time and I am financially responsible!! I've had no contact from 'Scottish Power' until two weeks ago... an email addressed NOT to the potential new tenants, but to the man that owns the property - but sent to my email address Confused
Email stating the account was now in serious arrears and the agent involved in letting the house are absolutely INSISTING it is my responsibility to deal/pay this!
I moved out of that house yesterday, and the agent are now saying there is "£100's owing"... this obviously could be taken out of my deposit! Can someone PLEASE advise me?
How can I be responsible for a switch I NEVER made, and was totally unaware of??
I received an email from Scottish Power saying they apologise and will remove my details, I copied this and sent it to the agent... the agent are still insisting I pay this bill!
Please help Sad x

Presumably you've been using gas/electric between now and Feb. How have you been paying for it?

It doesn't matter who the supplier was/is - you need to pay the bill for the electricity that you used while living in the property.

If there was a switch then you'll have no longer been billed by your old supplier - what bills were you paying between February and now?

I'm with a company called 'Utilita' - my direct debits have been paid on time every month, no problem - all up to date and fine. Thus evidence has been sent to the agent and Scottish Power. Scottish Power have sent me an email apologising for 'the inconvenience and will remove my details from the account immediately'... I sent a copy of this to the agent who have said its not enough and its still my responsibility Confused
Surely this can't be the case!??

The old supplier should have a record of only supplying the property up until the date it switched to Scottish Power so if that direct debit to them is still active you should be well in credit. It's a complete pain that the switch went forward without your knowledge but i would imagine you would still be liable to pay for the energy that you used.

So has Scottish Power said that no-one owes them any money or that just they'll pursue the landlord instead?

It sounds like the company you've been paying owe Scottish Power - not you, not the landlord.

Ultimately, you need to know who had the right to collect money for supplying the power for the months in question.
