Your top three long-haul holiday destinations

Given we haven't been anywhere for over a year now, we are planning a long-haul holiday in 2022 (UK summer or autumn). There are so many beautiful places to visit though and choosing is proving hard. We're not looking for a beach holiday or a city holiday. Ideally we'd like something with lots of nature (Canada, Rockies, that kind of thing). We've been to Australia and have done safaris in Africa and are keen to try something new.

So I thought I'd ask here - what are your top three long-haul holiday destinations? It'd be just two adults, no kids. Thank you!

My favourite holidays have been japan, Vancouver & (not long haul) Iceland.
Japan might be a bit too much city but there is certainly a lot of nature to see too. The other two definitely fit your criteria.

Japan is on my list but I want to research it very well before going because I want to do it 'right.'

Vancouver is also on the (short)list. Would two weeks be enough (bearing in mind I can't take a month off work!) to have a look around the island?

I've been to Iceland - fantastic place!

Oh I wish I was planning these trips again.

Japan
Malaysia
Vietnam

Prince Edward Island and the rest of the Canadian Maritimes. Not as 'adventure' as the Rockies but super interesting.

A Malaysia/Singapore double header would also be high on my list.

Pacific Northwest is great especially if travel is still a little tricky, they have very high vax rates, Sri Lanka is one of my favourite places but realistically it's unlikely to be possible for a good while, my dream though is South American tour

Palavah · 13/07/2021 17:37

Strongly recommend a trip through the Grand Canyon by boat, down the Colorado river. About 8 days, camping overnight in the canyon.

South Africa and Sri Lanka are both fantastic in different ways for a range of scenery and wildlife.

New Zealand
Vietnam
Malaysia

Borneo and Cuba are both great. I don’t mean sitting on a beach but touring round, they both have so many great things to see. Obviously Borneo is more nature focused than Cuba but Cuba still has rain forest and many other things to see.

Look at somewhere like Audley or Rickshaw travel for tour ideas.

1.Fly to Calgary, do the National Park from Banff, take the Rocky Mountaineer train to Vancouver, then board a ship and cruise Alaska.
So much wildlife!
2.Or fly to Buenos Aires, visit Iguazu Falls then take a cruise to Antarctica.

  1. Travel the length of Chile.
WhiskeyNeverStartsToTasteNice · 13/07/2021 17:59

Angkor Wat in Cambodia (combine with Vietnam)

My other recommendations wouldn't appeal as I'm a massive beach holiday fan.

InTheNameOfAllThatIsHonest · 13/07/2021 18:06

Wow so many amazing idea, thank you! I've done Vietnam and Malaysia and my OH has done Cuba and lived in Singapore.

I've also done the US canyons (would do them again but there are too many amazing places I haven't seen that I really should do before re-doing the US canyons!).

I'm going to spend the weekend looking up the destinations you've suggested. Thanks again and keep 'em coming please!

If you want nature and wildlife it has to be Costa Rica.

Volcanoes, cloud forests, rain forests, oceans, turtles, sloths, birds,

anotherday235 · 13/07/2021 18:28

Thailand, Canada, New Zealand

Haven't been to many more long haul holiday destinations apart from the above but they were my favourites and would visit all again.

MrsHamlet · 13/07/2021 18:29

Central Asia. Incredible.

bestbefore · 13/07/2021 18:29
