If you had a private autism diagnosis as an adult

Can I ask, did you approach your GP to 'add' it to your medical records?

Curious about this because it never occurred to me to do it but someone I 'know' has just been diagnosed and was talking about having to phone the GP to let them know!

Yes I did. Gave them a full copy of my report too. It isn’t essential but for me personally I felt it would be a bit of a security blanket incase I got seriously ill or was in hospital for some reason. When utterly overwhelmed I struggle to function even on a basic level, and can even become mute in stressful situations. I felt better knowing that it would be there for medical staff to see on my records (not sure how likely it is they would read it though). I am quite scared of being kept in hospital etc due to sensory issues and struggling round other people. My husband was also diagnosed but chose not to. But for him it would be more complicated as he is a GP and would mean his colleagues knowing. He is a very private person and his autism doesn’t affect his work so didn’t see it as necessary.

I am exactly the same. Sometimes I literally cannot talk. I think I will ring the GP and see what they say, we are not allowed in just now so I can't just take the report along. I can't believe it didn't cross my mind to do this before now. I have been diagnosed 4 years

Not surprising that you didn’t think of it before. Yes, I am literally unable to talk sometimes. I would like to think that if this arose in hospital etc then at least if someone saw my notes, then they would understand there was more going on than me just refusing to speak. Of course my husband would be able to explain but there are only the two of us, and one day he may not be there to help advocate for me. I’m a huge overthinker so this gives me a little peace of mind

Hi, can I ask how you go about getting a private diagnosis? As my DS has gotten older he is displaying more and more autistic traits. I don't hold out much hope getting a face up face doctors appointment anytime soon. We are in Scotland. Thanks
