Second job tax

Hi, can anyone help with this query please?

I am starting a new part time job soon and will earn below the personal tax threshold.
I am thinking of topping up my hours with a second job of 4 hours per week.

Both jobs together still don't add up to the personal allowance.

Would I still get emergency taxed on the second job?

Not if you give them your correct tax code. 'Emergency Tax' (never sure why it's called that) is when they don't have your correct tax code and you're taxed on the whole amount.

You can apply to have your tax code split, email/call HMRC.

If you know how much you'll earn you just need to set the split so neither job is taxed.

For example if you will earn a total of £2000 per year from the 4 hour job and £8000 per year from the bigger PT job, you could have 80% of your tax code allocated to your main job, around £10k or so pa and the other 20% for your 4 hour job (about £2.5k pa or so).

Thank you, so there shouldn't be any tax paid from either job if the sum total of earnings is below the personal allowance?

Well technically no, but it depends how the companies you work for act

I have my tax code split between two places and there is still some adjustment at the end of the tax year

With you being in the position of not earning above your personal allowance it should be sorted pretty quick
