Will anything remove a tomato ketchup stain?

My navy top now has a rusty coloured splodge in the middle of it. It had dried in but was rinsed in cold water, washed and stain had set. Have tried washing up liquid with an ice cube, vinegar and leaving it in direct sunlight but to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions or is all lost?

Thanks!

Elbow grease?

Doorhandleghost · 12/07/2021 21:04

I’ve had good results with tresemme deep cleansing shampoo - rub it on neat and leave it for a day, then put in the wash. That stuff gets stains out of anything! (Discovered by accident on holiday once after a chocolate accident and that was all I had to hand).

Sunshine.

No idea if it'll work but bicarbonate made into a paste with cold water and left on for a while got blood out for me, worth a shot ?

SquitMcJit · 12/07/2021 21:10

Shout stain removing spray is brilliant.

Around £2 in Sainsbury’s and Wilkos.

Spray on stain on dry top.Leave to soak in for 15 mins then wash as normal.

Are you sure the jumper hasn't got bleached by something as that would cause a rusty stain on navy.

Washing up liquid rubbed in and then washing with bio powder usually works for me

olderthanyouthink · 12/07/2021 21:19

Heat doesn't set stains. Long (minimum and hour, 2 is better) 40° wash with the medium/heavy dose of detergent (read the label properly for water hardness and machine size) and a scoop or two of stain remover will get it out.

I am CONSTANTLY getting tomato sauce and ketchup out of whites, along with dirt, strawberry, chocolate, orange etc.

olderthanyouthink · 12/07/2021 21:20

Actually rust colour on navy sounds like bleached and the only fix for that is dye. Is the patch lighter than the rest of the fabric?

reallyworriedjobhunter · 12/07/2021 21:34

Sunshine - every time

Catintwohats · 12/07/2021 21:49

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will try them one at a time! Patch is a dark rust colur and definitely cannot be bleach which is what is looks like but it’s just impossible. Unless McDonalds have bleach in their ketchup 🙀.

Hang it on the washing line and leave it for a day or two. I had turmeric on a white top and washed it twice with the oxy powder on a long wash then left it in full sun and it’s gone!

lifehappened · 13/07/2021 04:18

Another one for sunshine. I was told by my friend about this and now literally any stain comes out if I put in direct sunlight. Mental

PurpleSapphire · 13/07/2021 04:32

Elbow grease is the best thing i've found in years. I spray it on and leave it until I do the next wash, not sure if you're supposed to do that but it's never left a stain or affected the colour of anything.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 13/07/2021 05:15

How long have you left it in the sun for? I find some stains take up to a week on a sunny windowsill before they fade completely. On another note, you've made me really fancy a McDonald's now! Grin

Carrott21 · 13/07/2021 05:43

I was going to say that sometimes I have to leave items on line for a week and the stain comes out eventually.

lovelylemonylolly · 13/07/2021 06:00

Another vote for sunshine, hang in a sunny window and it will disappear after one or two days. The pigment is completely faded by UV light.

Catintwohats · 13/07/2021 23:23

Oh that’s interesting re the sun. Have been away today so not tried anything but it was only on a windowsil for a day so clearly not long enough. It gives great weather over the weekend so will get it out in direct sunlight then.

Am sitting giggling at my stupidity. Early on someone suggested elbow grease and I thought no hope, it won’t come out with me scrubbing at it more than I have. And now I see elbow grease mentioned again today and realise it’s a stain remover 🤣🤣🙄🙄. What sort of eejit am I? It’s another for my list but am going for sunlight first!

Thanks all
