What do children call their grandparents?

What do your children call your parents/partners parents? Why?

I don't understand why people call their grandmas 'nanny'? Is it something cultural I don't understand?

We've got specific and different words for each maternal grandparent and paternal grandparent that is derived from the language of the culture.

But as far as I know, this doesn't exist in the English language? Can someone explain and/or share the different things kids call their grandprents?

We're Ganda and mamaa which is what our 3year old granddaughter calls us 😁

35andThriving · 14/07/2021 16:29

Ds uses Nana and Grandad. I used Nanny and Grandad (surname) when I was growing up. If ds ever makes me a grandmother I think I'd like to be Gran.

My dad died before we had children but would have been Grandad. My mum is Grandma.
My late FiL was Opa and my MiL is Oma.

LordFoofingtonismyMaster · 14/07/2021 16:55

My kids have Nana and Grandad, Granny and Bill. My dad is not called Bill or anything remotely close to Bill. My dd started this and nobody knows how or why as she's not the first grandchild and the others already had a shared name for him which we would call him in front of her in the early days. That said it has stuck, they all call him Bill now as do we. The irony.....he's always hated the name 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

lollypoppi · 14/07/2021 16:57

We have Gran and grandad.

My fil wanted grandpa but she just kept calling him grandad 🤷🏻‍♀️

We had different names for family when I was growing up. Dads side and Gran and grandad. Mums side were nana and papa. My dads Gran was my granny. Actually is a gd idea to call them all something different. My dd calls them by Gran and first name if she's referring to them otherwise I don't know which one she's talking about 🙈

Rabbit600 · 24/09/2021 00:39

I had a Grandma and Grandad and a Nannie.

My other Grandad, who I never met, was refered to by his first name or just 'mom's dad' if we had a conversation about him. Her parents got divorced when she was six and she didn't have a great relationship with him.

I also had a Nan, who was my great-grandmother on my mom's side and her husband (my great-grandfather) just went by Grandad (surname).

My cousins had two Nannie's growing up (one spelt, Nanny and one, Nannie). To them they were Nannie (first name) and Nanny (first name).

I've always spelt Nannie with an 'ie'. I remember when I was very little, my Nannie told me that you should always spell Nannie with an 'ie' because when spelt with a 'y' it is refering to a nanny goat.

My kids only really see dh’s parents, they call them Nanny & Granddad - everyone here seems to say Nanny & Granddad.

Kinsters · 24/09/2021 02:48

My mum and dad are granny and grandad DH's are mar mar and yeh yeh (Chinese). In Chinese there's different names for maternal grandma, paternal grandma etc. which stops any confusion!

Sn0tnose · 24/09/2021 06:59

We had nanny/Nan and Grandad growing up. She tried for Nana, but it never caught on with us. My mum is also Nanny/Nan. DH has Nan’s, a Bampi and a Daddo (South Wales)

Mariell · 24/09/2021 07:26

My parents are Nanny and Grandad to my children.

Their father’s mother is called Grandma as that’s what she wanted to be called which was great as my mother said she would hate to be called Grandma and wanted to be called Nanny.

@maxelly

Thing is, there isn't a single 'thing' or word(s) that all British children use, there are regional and class based variations as well as personal preferences. Nan/Nanny/Nana for example are to some extent a Northern and to some extent a working class thing (starts class war).

Granny and Grandad would be perhaps the most generic term for grandmother/father but lots of people use gramps or gran or pop or poppa or other words as well...

@maxelly I think the same about the class thing. Nan/nanny sounds more working class to me. Maybe in the past posh people all had a nanny as in a paid child carer so didn't use it??

We let the grandparents decide for themselves, same as my parents did with theirs. When dd1 was born my granny was still alive so my mum wouldn't have used that as it was already in use. She uses grandma, the same as her mum did.

Abraxan · 24/09/2021 07:37

Growing up all my grandmothers were called nana, great grandmothers - nannan/nana. All the grandfathers were grandad.

Dd called here grandparents nana/grandad. One set of great grandparents she called great grandma/great granddad, another was grandad great/grandma great and the third was grandma.

They were differentiated when talking about them using their surnames predominately. When they were in the room - and it is/was unusual for them all to be there at same time - it was just the term chosen, no need for surname and they were being spoken to direct.

tiredturnip · 24/09/2021 07:42

Why don't you understand why people say nanny? It's just another word for grandma?

My son has a nanny and grandad and then nana & grandad.

Lesina · 24/09/2021 07:49

I’m a grandmother to a 6 year old. He calls me a rough approximation of my first name which was one of his first words. He calls his grandfather by his first name. Everyone one else just gets random words assigned to them Grin

DaphneduM · 24/09/2021 07:56

We're Granny and Granddad to our grandson. There are also two Nanna's (plus their Christian names) another Granddad and Grandpa on my son-in-law's side. Ours are usually prefaced with 'silly Granny' and 'silly Granddad' when we're messing around with him!!!!

Mommabear20 · 24/09/2021 08:11

Grandma, grandad, Nanna and grandad.
My mum had her first grandchild quite young so didn't want to be a grandma as she said it made her sound old 😂

problembottom · 24/09/2021 08:16

DD has her grandma and grandad and on DP’s side her nana and grandad. I really dislike the term nana for some reason but I obviously keep quiet about this.

starrynight21 · 24/09/2021 08:19

My grandchildren have six grandparents. They are all Grandma or Grandad with their christian name. Two of them are Grandma Jenny , but since the kids never see the two at the same time, there isn't any confusion.

FatAnkles · 24/09/2021 08:19

All my GPs have died now but I had Nanny, Gran, and two Grandads.

DD has two Grandads, a Nana (her choice) and then she calls her Grandad's second wife by a preferred nickname. Her Grandad's first wife died years before DD was born and we refer to her a Nanny (name).

I think it's great we have so many names.

HalloHello · 24/09/2021 08:29

My parents and in law's chose their names when my daughter was born, first Grandchild and since her, have 5 more and it's stuck. They're Granny, Granda, Nanna and Grandad. My husband calls his Grandmother Nanny, always has. Don't know why it offends anyone.

Mermaidpool · 24/09/2021 08:37

Nana and grandad, grandma and grandad. GP chose what they wanted to be called, no idea why they picked those we just went with what they wanted.
