What do children call their grandparents?

What do your children call your parents/partners parents? Why?

I don't understand why people call their grandmas 'nanny'? Is it something cultural I don't understand?

We've got specific and different words for each maternal grandparent and paternal grandparent that is derived from the language of the culture.

But as far as I know, this doesn't exist in the English language? Can someone explain and/or share the different things kids call their grandprents?

*Granddads

StarryNight468 · 12/07/2021 17:54

My dc have granny for my mum, grandma for ex dm. Then they call my granny grandma and my nan nan. They don't add the great as it's a bit of a mouthful.

StarryNight468 · 12/07/2021 17:55

Oh my grandad on my dads side when he was alive was papa for my dc. My grandad on my mums side is called grandad.

Does it really matter??

I find the name "Grandma" very aging. I imagine a frail grey old lady.

TrickyD · 12/07/2021 18:00

My sister-in-law said she wanted to be called Nanna, as that is what she had called her own grandmother.

‘Certainly not’, said her son. ‘It’s common’.

I felt a bit sorry for her though I silently agreed with him.

(I’m Granny or sometimes Gans)

Itstheprinciple · 12/07/2021 18:00

My mum is nanny. Her choice. She doesn't like Grandma/Granny - thinks they sound old. DH's mum is Nanna X. We are northern and lower MC if that makes a difference! DH and I both had nans.

My step dad is Pops. DD had many grandads when she was little (mine and DH's dads, DH's grandad and my two grandads) and they were Grandad X (either first name or surname following mine and DH's tradition). Only one was known as 'Grandad Nan-and-Grandad' as he was the only one who lived with someone else.

DinosaurDiana · 12/07/2021 18:03

My grandmas were Nana.
Possibly a northern thing ?

Toottootdrivers · 12/07/2021 18:14

I had a Nana and a Gran.
DS has a Nanna and a Grandma (although it comes out as Marmar and I think it might stick)

Buttons294749 · 12/07/2021 18:20

I am not posh so had a nana and DC have a nana and nanny 🤣
Had a Welsh Bampy
Have a Scottish granny

I think nana sounds young whereas grandma is old.

The one thing I can't stand is Glamma 🙈🙈

MKCH · 12/07/2021 18:28

I had a Nanny & Grandad and Granny & Grandpa.
My DD has Granny and then Ouma, Oupa, Grandad and Granny Lou. We also call her great grandmother Ouma as Oumagrootjie is just not going to happen. Even I can't say it. 😂

mynameisbrian · 12/07/2021 18:29

when I was younger it was nana and grampa. My DC call my mum gran and other grandparents are lela and grampy. (lela is a shortened version of the spanish name)

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 12/07/2021 18:32

My parents, Nana and Granda, because my eldest just started using nana for some reason, so the rest do, and in my family it's always granda.

Dps parents, gran and papa, just because that's what all the children in the family called them.

Camomila · 12/07/2021 18:46

DS1 calls mine nonno and nonna (Italian) and DHs lolo and lola (Tagalog).

If he's talking about them to someone English he sometimes says grandma and grandpa/grandad

RoseMartha · 12/07/2021 19:19

Nanny and Grandad

My own grandparents were called the same as too were my exh grandparents.

We differentiate the Nannies by adding their first name, eg Nanny Margaret.

My parents wanted to be called that. Surely it should be what the grandparent is happy with.

frazzledfragglefromfragglerock · 12/07/2021 19:23

My parents took the name that their own parent used. So my mum is Grandma and my dad is Grandad. (My grandparents were grandma and grandpa and granny and grandad) DHs parents are Nanny (her choice) and Poppa to us but Grandpa to the other grandkids! Poppa was because my DSD called him that as a baby.

DHs birth mum was already a nanny when we met her so we call her nanny "first name" otherwise it's too confusing!

Laquila · 12/07/2021 21:07

It's just personal choice. I called mine Grandma and Grandad but my kids call theirs Nana and Grandad (and they call mine, Grampy and Grandma XXX).

I guess it matters as much as anything else on Mumsnet that people are having a conversation about?!

And I've you've just demonstrated, people have preconceived ideas of what these names imply/denote, so I guess some people want to avoid stereotyping, in some cases.

RandomUsernameHere · 12/07/2021 21:27

In our family it's Grandma & Grandpa for one set of GPs and Granny & Grandad for the other. We decided on this so they all have different names, it would get confusing otherwise! The Great GPs are Granny "first name" and Grandad "first name", I think they felt including the "great" was too ageing.

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 12/07/2021 21:30

My children have
Nan (my mum)
Grandaddy (my step dad)
Grandma name (my step grandma)

Nana (their dads mum)

Their dads dad passed away before they were born and I'm NC with my dad.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 12/07/2021 21:34

Apparently Prince William couldnt say Granny so HM the queen is called Gary by her GC.

I heard this on QI. I dont know if its true but I really really hope it is!

ChocolateRiver · 12/07/2021 21:35

My mum is called Nanna and dh mum is called Grandma. They both got to choose what they wanted. There are also 2 grandads, but they certainly rarely (almost never) see my dad so when they say grandad they’re referring to dh dad.

My cousin solved that by calling great grandma GG, this morphed into Gigi, which perfectly suited my glamorous aunt who was stylish until the day she died at 103.
LuluJakey1 · 12/07/2021 21:44

My parents are dead so DC only have the PIL. They call MIL 'Grandma' or 'Granny' and FIL 'Grandad' DS2 calls them both 'Ganna' but he is only just 2.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/07/2021 22:29

Our Gdcs have 2 grannies, a grandpa and a granddad.

I hate ‘grandma’. To me it sounds even older than granny, and fat to boot.

Triceratopsmama · 13/07/2021 00:13

My parents are nana&grandad, ils are nanny&grandad and mil's mother is Granny surname.
