What do children call their grandparents?

What do your children call your parents/partners parents? Why?

I don't understand why people call their grandmas 'nanny'? Is it something cultural I don't understand?

We've got specific and different words for each maternal grandparent and paternal grandparent that is derived from the language of the culture.

But as far as I know, this doesn't exist in the English language? Can someone explain and/or share the different things kids call their grandprents?

*Grandmothers - don't know where that pesky apostrophe came from in my last post - think I am far too common for MN

spiderlight · 12/07/2021 16:15

Grandma and Pops, and Mamgu and Tadcu.

Youdiditanyway · 12/07/2021 16:16

Nanna and Grandad, my GPs are the same. My Mum was/is a young Grandma and she felt too young to be called Grandma.

We used nan and grandad. Nanny for small children that would still say mummy.

London, if that matters.

Billandben444 · 12/07/2021 16:27

Grandson's nursery used to say "Nanny's here!" when I picked him up - I used to baa under my breath 🐐

Danikm151 · 12/07/2021 16:33

I always call my Nan Nanny and I'm 30 now Grin, my step nan was Nanny(name)
My son has 3 sets of grandparents and all the Nan's are in their late 40s so Grandma and Granny would make them feel too old so my mom is Nanny and the others are Nanny(name)
My Nan is Nanna because I didn't want my son to get too confused ( poor kid already is at 16months and these strange women referring to themselves as the same name haha)

I had a Nanny/Nan and Grandad, and a Gran and Grandpa (who died long before I was born). My Gran's partner was called by his first name.

My DC have Nanny and Dandan [Name], and Nanna and Dandan [Name]. The GFs were originally going to be Grandad but DD couldn't say that, and the closest she got was Dandan, which has stuck. I know a couple of people whose kids call their grandfathers Dandan.

Nain and Taid. And Gran and Grandad

Blossomtoes · 12/07/2021 16:42

We’re Granny and Grandpa. The other grandmother thinks Granny sounds old, I was delighted as I think Nanny sounds like a goat, she’s welcome to it.

Acarerformum · 12/07/2021 17:07

Our grandchildren call us Granny and Granda. The other set of grandparents are Grandma and Grandpa. Their great grandparent is called Nana. I love Granny and wouldn’t want to be called anything else!

Mammma91 · 12/07/2021 17:12

Im in scotland
Great grandparents - granny and granda.
Grandparents - gran and granda

ivfgottwins · 12/07/2021 17:14

Nanny. But both are fairly young and "granny" just sounds really old and didn't suit them

FlumpyPoodle · 12/07/2021 17:15

It's funny. Nanny makes me think of really ancient women,

ILoveYouILoveYouIDo · 12/07/2021 17:15

Nanny and grandad.
Grandma and grandad.
Why does it matter?

MonsterJammin · 12/07/2021 17:18

Gran and Granda for both sets. Gran/Granda First Name if need to distinguish between them in conversation.

FedNlanders · 12/07/2021 17:20

Oma
Pops
Nanna
Grandad

Clawdy · 12/07/2021 17:35

Nana and Grandpa here. Nana is linked to a few other languages - Nonna is Italian, Nanni is Indian, Nain is Welsh, and probably more!

Tubbyinthehottub · 12/07/2021 17:40

I've never heard of Pappy. What region uses this?

A2BviaCandD · 12/07/2021 17:43

Both sets of parents are nanny and granddad surname. My husbands nan is granny and my grandparents (deceased before children born) are angel nanny and granddad.

MissMogwai · 12/07/2021 17:44

I'm a youngish Grandma and I have had so many people ask me why I'm not Nana!
I would have been happy with Granny too, but I'm not keen on Nan or Nana.

I think most people stick with what they're used to. I had a grandma, and my mum is grandma so to me it's just right.

lachy · 12/07/2021 17:48

DD calls my parents Nannie and Papa.

She'll often mention Grandad Bob-in-Heaven and Nanny Lily-in-Heaven

I had 2 x Nana (Surname), a Grandma first name, a Grandad and a Papa.

elp30 · 12/07/2021 17:50

I called my maternal grandparents Mamá & Papá + their first names

I was the only one in my family that called my paternal grandmother by her first name. I can see now that it was horribly disrespectful and could understand that my cousins would react so shocked but my grandmother never corrected me.

My children call their English paternal grandparents Nanny & Granddad. They didn't know my parents (they died long ago) but I'm sure my mother would have liked to have been called "abuela".

I'm a grandmother and the grandchildren call us, Grandma & Granddad.

HR313 · 12/07/2021 17:50

When my DD was about 2 she started calling my mum (her grandma) ‘ma-ma’ it’s stuck ever since. I love it as it’s a little bit different ☺️ She calls her grandad, grandad. She only has one set of grandparents but her other grandad who sadly passed away a few years ago used to call him ‘old grandad’ which I thought was rather endearing.

Swifey40 · 12/07/2021 17:50

It's a geographical and class thing. I grew up with a Grandma and Papa and also a Granny and Grandad.

When my children were born we vetoed mil who wanted Nanny because to me that is someone who looks after children for a job, and to be truthful sounds common to me. So we now have a Grandma and Grandpa along with Granny and Grandad. Much easier and nicer than 'Nanny

MinnieMountain · 12/07/2021 17:52

Grannys X and Y and Grands X and Y.

MIL specifically asked not to be known as Grandma as her DM was and she didn’t like her.
