As per title, I have a nearly 10yo who is in need of reading material and I'm wondering if he's still too young for hhgttg? I feel like he'd appreciate its brand of humour.

No, it’s fine, nothing inappropriate that I can remember. What about Terry Pratchett as well?

whatsagoodusername · 12/07/2021 08:46

DH is currently reading it to our 9 and 10 year olds. They think it's hysterical.

Magpiecomplex · 12/07/2021 08:46

Both of mine read it at that age. Shocked a parent volunteer reading with them at school in both cases but they were fine with it. Seconding Terry Pratchett, and Artemis Fowl too.

Ooh yes, I love TP. Not heard of Artemis Fowl, I'll look it up!

Yes, I read the book after my dad when it first came out and I would have been about 9 or 10.
You also both might enjoy listening to the original radio series which you can now get as a podcast. We listened as a family when it was first on and still all love it (which is why I borrowed my dad’s book). I introduced my DDs to them at a similar age and they then went onto the books too. Dd1 is the one who found it online.

It will be fine, some stuff will go likely go over his head, e.g. there is a reference to the triple-breasted whore of galumbits in one of the books but as a side reference. Not sure uf it is in hitchhiker or one of the sequals.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 12/07/2021 09:54

Ah yes - isn't it the triple breasted whore of eroticon 6? I'll be reading it with him so I'll skate over that one ShockGrin

Yes, her name is Eccentrica Gallumbits

And she's mentioned only in passing. You'll be fine and I hope DS enjoys them.

And Dirk Gently

Throwing in another recommendation- the Alfie Fleet books are great and in a similar vein but aimed at kids.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 12/07/2021 12:59

Ooh, I'll look up Alfie Fleet as well! Thanks!

Chris Priestley's Maudlin Towers books might go down well too. A cross between Charles Addams and Molesworth.

Love the book recommendations - ds always wants me to tell him what to read next and it drives me mad HmmGrin
