She’s not really my friend is she?

It’s my birthday today. WhatsApp group messages this morning sending birthday wishes etc. I said thanks and that we were looking forward to watching the football! I sent a cheery photo of my football-themed birthday cake which my mum had made. I have 2 boys who really like football too - and are really really excited.

One of my friends messaged the WhatsApp group about 5 minutes into the match and said : “can’t believe you’re watching it. Football is disgusting sport. All supporters are awful. Disgrace to the country etc” She won’t let it drop.

I just … don’t understand. I’m not supporting thugs, I’m just enjoying a sport with my kids! She hasn’t acknowledged it’s my birthday, just laid into me for watching a football match.

Am I being stupid here, or is she being pretty unkind?

Send her a message back that says Fuck you. Other people have their own opinions. Thanks for the birthday wishes, by the way.

Cabbageandpeas · 11/07/2021 21:07

That’s one approach! Grin Thanks, she’s left me feeling a bit of a tit about it, but I’ll keep that message in mind!

Celebrate tour birthday how you like and ignore her comments

Happy Birthday 🥳

bungabungaboo · 11/07/2021 21:13

Your 😂

Nohomemadecandles · 11/07/2021 21:14

She's a joy thief. Ignore her.

Strugglingtodomybest · 11/07/2021 21:15

Send her a Biscuit

NeepNeepNeep · 11/07/2021 21:17

Can you mute her? What a twat

CambsAlways · 11/07/2021 21:17

There’s always one! What a weird thing to say to you

MadMadMadamMim · 11/07/2021 21:18

You could be slightly more polite and text Wow. Can't believe how intolerant and bigoted your texts are! How about a bit of pride in something that England have done well to achieve. Why do you think everyone has to feel the same as you? I think it's pretty unreasonable to decide you'll police what I'm choosing to do with my children on my birthday...

ChaToilLeam · 11/07/2021 21:19

She’s an uptight twit. Football’s not my thing either but there’s no reason to react that way! Tell her “you spelt Many Happy Returns wrong”.

Enjoy your birthday and the match! 🥳

Well, I share her sentiments but wouldn't have shared them with you like that. She is a poor friend if she is willing to ruin your birthday like that
HollowTalk · 11/07/2021 21:20

Mute her and enjoy the football. I do love Tell her “you spelt Many Happy Returns wrong” though!

I’m not English but if she spent anytime listening to the manager or team she’d see they come over well and obviously not all of the tens of millions watching it are thugs.

What’s she into? Look for some negative story about that and generalise about everyone who likes that.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 11/07/2021 21:25

Happy birthday! Cake
Just ignore her. It's a group chat so presumably all the other people will have seen her reply and thought her rude. Best to retain a dignified silence.
Someone in one of the group chats sent a racist meme and then deleted it and said "wrong chat". Noone has said anything but we are all judging (I havent changed my view as he was a twat anyway but still !!)

Cabbageandpeas · 11/07/2021 21:25

Oh I love this! Grin

Does she act in a similar way when it’s others’ birthdays? Some people simply can’t stand not being the centre of attention and will say or do anything to be the one people are talking about.

Hope you’re having a happy birthday

Cabbageandpeas · 11/07/2021 21:27

That was meant to include the ‘you spelt many happy returns wrong’! Great response!

She's a bitch.

TheNestedIf · 11/07/2021 21:32

Send her that picture of the England fan with the flare up his bum and ask her if she'd like to help you blow out the candles.

MichelleScarn · 11/07/2021 21:43

I'd just ignore, and poss delete from social media.
She's clearly looking for some drama!

Firstly Happy Birthday!

I hate people like this who's opinion is more important than anyone else's. You should be doing whatever you want for your birthday, and fuck anyone else who think they know better.

I've had similar messages from a friend in a group chat today but about the opposite as it's also my birthday. She asked me what I had planned, so I told her. She asked if I watching the football and I said no as it doesn't interest me.

Apparently I'm miserable as it's a huge national event that hasn't happened in a long time and not in our lifetime, and I should be celebrating. I should let my 4yo stay up late to watch (not a chance, he gets cranky around 6:30ish), and spend my birthday celebrating with everyone else.

I've told her no twice, she's not let up so I'm now ignoring her comments about football. I will discuss anything else but football is off the table. I've had a lovely day with my family and now my husband is watching in the next room, whilst I read and drink gin. A nice relaxing way to end the day.

Blueskytoday06 · 11/07/2021 22:05

Yes she's a fit. Happy Birthday 🥳 enjoy the cake
