Does anyone play/understand this game? We were recommended it by friends but can’t make head or tail of it. There are 6 pages of really complicated rules and my two children have just quitted after one turn as we can’t work out how to play - is it just us being stupid? Confused Grin

I'd be crap at explaining it, if only my DP were here, he even managed to get my 8 year old understand! Are there any YouTube videos you could watch? The only way we got it in the end was to do a few open games with DP so he could guide us to what was best to do with the cards!

Definitely watch some people play it on YouTube, we did that with One Night Ultimate Werewolf because we couldn't understand the written rules (turns out it's a really simple game!)

Most cards in munchkin are self explanatory once you get into a rythym (kick down the door, loot the room/look for trouble) anything else should be on the card and you can Google FAQ'S for wei d stuff.

Oh I love munchkin, not played for years though. I think you can get away with being quite loose with the rules of that helps

My kids love Munchkin. Do you have the board? That makes it easier I think.
For each level you kick the door down. You draw a card. If it is a monster you fight it. If you win you go up a level and draw the requisite number of treasure cards. If it isn’t a monster you keep the card in your hand or do what it says. If it isn’t a monster you can then “look for trouble” and fight a monster in your hand - if you defeat it you get its treasure but don’t go up a level. Or you can loot the room - take a card from the other pile.
When fighting monsters it is just a numbers thing. What is your score? What is the monster’s score? If your score is higher than the monster’s score, you win and go up a level. If the monster’s score is higher you lose and suffer whatever penalty it says. Your score is the level you are on plus any bonuses you have from armour etc. If your score is less than the monster’s even with all that, another player can help you and then you add your scores together against the monster. But then they might want some treasure.
Basically - kick the door down. Draw a card. Fight the monster or loot the room.

To be honest I have been drinking wine so probably not the best to explain the rules Grin

Sunnysausage · 11/07/2021 22:34

No that is actually a good explanation (and no we don’t have the board). But hi w do you have monsters in your hand if you have to fight them? Feel free to reply later - I have also had Wine so probably not in the most receptive frame of mind to get the intricacies of this dratted game...

When you loot the room you take a card from the same pile as when you kick down the door. So you might get a monster or you might get a curse which you can use on others, or a class or race (wizard or hobbit for example.) If you get a monster when looting the room you dont fight it, you put it in your hand. Then you can fight it another turn instead of looting the room.

CeaselessWatcher · 11/07/2021 22:43

I realise when I said loot the room before I said take a card from the other pile - I meant the "kick the door down" pile notbthe "treasure" pile - sorry, confusing! Treasure pile just for after monsters defeated

The card game is different to the board game.
The you tube instructions are better - but it’s still not easy! X

There is a new tutorial available for Munchkin that walks you through game play step by step... dized.com/to/munchkin-tutorial/
and this webpage has a playmat you can download that will help keep your cards organized.

As for the comment "The card game is different to the board game." - there are actually two ways to buy Munchkin... the basic set which is just cards and the Deluxe version which adds a board and player pawns to keep track of your levels. Otherwise game play of both is exactly the same. That being said... there are MANY different themes available (Disney, Harry Potter, TMNT, etc). Good Luck!!
